Summer 2019 | Workshops and Classes for Kids and Teens.

Now that my son's Recognition Day is over and done with, I can finally say that we are officially on school break! Yay! No more waking up at the crack of dawn, no quizzes, exams, and projects to worry about, no lectures to rewrite and reviewers to type - for the next eight weeks, at least.

But just because we're on a break from school activities doesn't mean we'll be lazing around at home. In fact, Yue will be hustling even harder with his karate training as he prepares for his next tournament and his upcoming belt test. And now that he's an incoming sixth grader, he needs to prepare for high school entrance exams as soon as possible since some schools hold their exams by early October. We're laying the groundwork by signing up for a review class and doing a writing workshop at home.

That being said, here's a list of workshops and activities that Yue and his friends will be preoccupied with all summer long. If you're from San Pablo City or from neighboring towns here in Laguna, you might want to check these out:

MATH-Inic
MATH-Inic is a series of special Math courses that aims to transform children - turning Math haters into Math lovers, and Math lovers to Math masters. It introduces fun, fast and easy ways of computing Math problems and enriches traditional Math classroom lessons through new solving techniques.
Math-Inic San Pablo City.
Not only does MATH-Inic enhance brainpower through Mental Math exercises, it also guarantees results such as improved grades in Math and increased chance of passing scholarship and entrance exams in prestigious schools (think UP and Philippine Science High School).
Yue took a diagnostic exam before we registered to determine which module will be suitable for him.
MATH-Inic's summer classes will run from April 10 to May 9, 2019. Classes will be held thrice a week, two hours per session. Registration is still ongoing.

Pencils Up
Pencils Up invites kids and teens to its summer art classes - Drawing and Painting (for beginners and advanced levels), Arts and Crafts, and Creative Play (for younger kids). They also offer Creative Writing Classes for aspiring artists and budding writers.
Pencils Up Summer Art Class.
Their Summer Art Class starts on April 3, and will be offered until July 2019. Registration fee is inclusive of art materials.

The official organizer of Milo Philippines' basketball program, the B.E.S.T Center is perhaps the most popular and longest running basketball clinic in the country, having been established in 1978. This program has helped train champions on the fundamentals of basketball with a scientific and modern approach, and has produced notable graduates such as Benjie Paras, Chris Tiu, Kiefer Ravena, Thirdy Ravena, and brothers Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano.
B.E.S.T. Champions.
B.E.S.T Basketball Clinics will be offered in various locations all throughout summer. For San Pablo City, training will be held at the San Gabriel Sports Complex from May 20 to May 25.

Lake City Swimming Club Learn to Swim Program
Swimming is not just fun and play, but also an excellent activity for a child's overall health and well being. It's a life skill, and something that your kid will retain for the rest of his or her life. These were exactly the reasons why I enrolled Yue in this swimming class in the summer of 2014, and the year after that.
Learn to Swim with the Royal Dolphins.
The Learn to Swim Program offers personalized training for beginners and competitive swimmers. The second batch of swimming lessons will start on April 8, with three more batches after that.

Founded in 1986, Ballet Regina Academy of Dance and Performing Arts offers a continuous program for classical ballet using the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD London) curriculum.
Ballet Regina Summer Dance Workshop.
They offer weekend classes during the school year and intensive training program every summer. This year's Summer Dance Workshop will be held from April 27 to June 2, with a free trial class on April 6. Modern dance and hip hop dance classes are also offered in their summer program.

Young Chefs' Kitchen
Young Chefs’ Kitchen offers hands-on training courses in different areas such as Culinary Arts, Baking / Pastry Arts, and other Food and Beverage training. These courses are designed to provide basic skills and training for women and youth for employment and business enterprise development purposes; and ultimately to enhance their socio-economic condition, to acquire desirable values and attitude, and to develop environmental awareness.
Young Chef's Kitchen Kiddie/Teens Workshop.
This summer, the kitchen will be open to kids age 6 and up. This special workshop will teach kids the basics of cooking and baking, plus lessons on proper food selection, dining etiquette, and mise en place (set up).

Karate-do and Taekwon-do at Kaleidoscope Kids Learning Center
Yue's karate journey began at Kaleidoscope Kids Learning Center (K2LC) four years ago. Back then, K2LC had only two classrooms, offered just a few summer programs, and had a small number of enrollees. Fast forward to 2019, K2LC is now a Dep Ed-recognized private school which offers pre-school and elementary education programs.
Kaleidoscope Kids Learning Center - home of martial arts champions!
Over-all karate champions at the 2019 In-School Youth Martial Arts Games!
For this summer. K2LC will offer various music, arts, and enrichment programs, including karate-do and taekwon-do. Summer classes will start on April 22. Come train with us! :)

Ready to make this summer a productive and memorable one for your kids? I know I am. :)

Meet, Greet, & Play!
The Play Camp had three workshop activities - Singing, Dancing, and Modeling.

Moose Play Camp 2018 | Gear up for Fun and Fashion this Summer!

I was around my son's age (he's turning ten this year) when I first came across the clothing brand Moose Gear. My brother and my cousin John owned several pieces from the brand, and they would often wear Moose Gear polo shirts and denim pants to church on Sunday or to birthday parties, family gatherings, and the like. The two boys always looked so dapper whenever they wear those clothes, and Moose Gear sort of became their unofficial Sunday best.

Fast forward to twenty years later, the Moose Gear legacy continues as it dresses up young boys in cool, comfortable, and hip fashion. This well-loved brand's claim to fame is their consistent use of high quality cotton fabric and the wide selection of styles and designs that kids (and their moms) love.
Moose Gear and Moose Girl, too!
The clothing company has also ventured into girls' fashion with Moose Girl - fun, stylish, and comfortable clothing apparel for young girls. The brand was launched in 2003, and became a hit among little girls and girls in their tweens.
Moose Gear kids - can you name them all?
Even celebrity kids are fond of the brand. From the child stars of my generation such as Patrick Garcia and Angelica Panganiban to Goin' Bulilit kids then and now (Nash Aguas, Sharlene San Pedro, Makisig Morales, and Bugoy Carino) - all of them have been part of the ever-growing Moose Gear family. The list goes on as Moose Gear continues to tap the talented and amazing kids in the entertainment industry.
Even Scarlet Snow Belo wears Moose Girl!

This summer, it's our kids' time to shine in the Moose Play Camp 2018 - a fun workshop slash meet-and-greet activity where kids can meet and interact with the Moose Family celebrity endorsers for hours of fun, inspiration, and entertainment.

The Play Camp also provides the opportunity for kids to attend a talent workshop conducted by professional teachers and harness their skills in dancing, singing, and modeling along the way. The workshop is geared to discover, cultivate, and enhance your kids' talents with the intent of helping build their confidence so that they may shine like their Moose Gear and Moose Girl endorsers. The Play Camp also marks the launching of the Moose Summer Collection, where participants and their parents can have a preview of the stylish kiddie outfits before they hit the stores.

Tales from the Dojo | How Martial Arts Can Help My Child.

Last Saturday, my son officially started his martial arts training. I signed him up for a two-month Karatedo Clinic at my friend's learning center, where he will learn basic karate and coordination drills as well as self-defense skills.
Following Senpai Louie's moves.
The latter is actually the main reason why my husband and I wanted Yue to practice martial arts (aside from the fact that we're a family of mixed martial arts fans). There have been quite a few instances when Yue would get hit by a classmate and he would do nothing but cry and tell the teacher what had happened. Not that I want my son to hit back, I just want him to be able to defend himself properly and be completely bully-proof.

A friend of mine once told me that getting Yue started into martial arts is one of the best gifts I could ever give him. I agree. Because aside from the self-defense aspect, martial arts can help my son (or any kid, for that matter) in so many ways. I've listed some of them below:

1. Encouraging Physical Activity.
Kids can stay on the couch watching TV or playing with tablets, and my son is no exception! Enrolling kids in a physically-demanding activity will encourage them to be more active and eventually give up on the sedentary lifestyle that they have been accustomed to.
Stretching with Sensei.
2. Promoting Self-discipline.
One of the main principles of all forms of the martial arts is self-discipline. Today’s kids are so pampered and highly accustomed to receiving instant gratification that lessons in self-restraint and discipline aren’t always easy to come by. However, kids with martial arts backgrounds are continually reminded of how important self-discipline is.

3. Instilling Respect.
Learning any martial arts style will require your child to show his/her instructor unflinching respect. Today’s kid culture doesn’t always include respect for adults and teachers, and even those in authority. But with martial arts, your child will learn to bow to the masters, and to their senpai who came before them. They will also learn to treat other students as they wish to be treated.
Learning the stances.
4. Increased Self-Esteem.
Confidence comes with achievement, so your child’s self-esteem level will get a boost with every new move he masters and every belt he earns. The sense of accomplishment a child feels by mastering a new technique or graduating to a new belt follows him everywhere he goes.
Working it!
5. Learning to Focus, Set, and Achieve Goals.
Almost all forms of martial arts are based around an accomplishment system of colored belts that signify the wearer’s degree of skill. When your child strives toward each new belt, he’s learning valuable lessons about focusing on a goal, and setting ways to achieve it.
Cool-down huddle.
6. Learning Conflict Resolution.
No, no, no, martial arts does not promote violence! Thinking that martial arts promotes violent behavior is justified if your only experience with the activity comes from the stuff you watch on TV. In fact, many defensive styles teach kids peaceful, non-violent conflict resolution skills and emphasize the importance of avoiding a physical altercation.
Playtime with Jared after karate training.
7. Improving Socialization Skills.
Kids who usually feel awkward in highly social environments may find it easier to get to know people and make new friends when they’re in a room filled with peers who share a common interest. Aside from that, kids will also learn to treat their dojo classmates and teachers with utmost respect and courtesy.

As the great Bruce Lee would say, "The martial arts are ultimately self-knowledge. A punch or a kick is not to knock the hell out of the guy in front, but to knock the hell out of your ego, your fear, or your hang-ups."

How about you, have you considered getting your child into martial arts?

The McDonald's Kiddie Crew Experience!

This post should have gone live two weeks earlier, but for some reason I got swamped with too much blogwork that I wasn't able to post as originally planned. Anyhow, better late than never, and here goes a quick (maybe a bit picture heavy) recap of one of the most popular summer activity here in the Philippines - the McDonald's Kiddie Crew Workshop.
Kiddie Crew paraphernalia!
The McDonald’s Kiddie Crew Workshop is a summer program specially designed for kids ages 6-12 years old. (Take note that my son is only four, but he got accepted anyway.) Registration fee for the said workshop costs Php 550, and includes the following items: shirt, cap, bag, ID with lace, and workshop materials.
Eager beaver! The little man's winning photo in the
Cutest Kiddie Crew contest on Twitter.
Done in batches, the workshop spanned the months of April and May where each batch went on-board for five days, 2 hours per day. The little man joined Batch 3 at SM San Pablo, which covered the week of April 15-20.
