How to Help Your Kids Enjoy Science.

One of the most important things any parent can do is help their child learn to love the world around them. Many parents are unsure how they can encourage their kids to become curious thinkers and willing to explore. Fortunately, even if you aren't very good at science yourself, it's possible to help your child learn more about planets, dirt, atoms, chemistry and even fossils. Here's how.

Yue at the Fantasy Forest in Lotte World, Seoul.

Get them the right gear.

Did you know you can buy kids lab coats? Consider investing in a lab coat and some great science gear for your kids. While you can do plenty of science experiments with things you have around the house, you'll be able to study even more with your child if you have a telescope and microscope. At the very least, consider getting items your child can use to collect and examine insects, leaves and flowers in your area.

Read with them.

There are plenty of books available that focus on science. Kids don't have to be bored in order to learn. Head to your local library or bookstore and pick out some fun books about different scientific topics. For example, you could read a book about kids discovering fossils to learn about dinosaurs or a book about a child who gets sick to learn about viruses and illnesses. Make sure you choose several different books to give your kids a well-rounded understanding of different ideas.

Get online.

Did you know there are online classes you can try with your kids? Even if you don't have a science museum nearby, you can take online science courses to learn more about nature, dinosaurs and biology. Consider enrolling in an online course with your kids to learn more. If classes aren't your thing, play some online discovery games together to learn more about specific scientific topics.

Remember that you don't have to know everything about science in order to enjoy learning with your kids. Even scientists don't know everything there is to know about science! The world outside is constantly changing and growing, so the important thing is that you have fun exploring with your kids and learning as a family.

Dr. Nielsen Donato and His True Heart for Animals.

What makes you wake up early in the morning?” asks veterinarian Dr. Nielsen Donato while strolling through his animal sanctuary. “It’s not work. It’s something that you’re excited about.”

When people think of veterinarians, they usually think of them tending to household pets, like cats and dogs. But Doc Nielsen isn’t a regular vet. He’s the managing partner and chief surgeon at Vets In Practice (VIP), which caters to not-your-usual pets, and he also has a background in Avian and Exotic Medicine.

But what makes him so special is his unbridled care for virtually any kind of animal, be it crawling, flying, galloping, or slithering.

Zuma the Albino Burmese python and Doc Nielsen pose for the camera.

Doc Nielsen’s passion started when he was around three years old. One of his favorite childhood memories was being excited about going to church just so he could see the yellow chicks and ducklings being sold by vendors outside.

Today, Doc Nielsen helps run the Laguna Wildlife Park & Rescue Center, which sits within his family’s property in Pansol. This non-profit organization houses around 100 species of farm animals and wildlife, including domestic and neglected pets, as well as exotic animals that were rescued from illegal sellers and dangerous living conditions. The wildlife park has everything from chickens and goats to monkeys and a serval cat, which he tends to with the help of his staff. It’s also backed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which assists in acquiring and transporting animals to the park.

Best Friends Forever: Doc Nielsen and Kulit.

The veterinarian calls the park his “happy place,” which he visits as early as 5 am to see all of the animals and listen to the different sounds that envelope the whole park. “When I’m walking here in the morning or afternoon, it relaxes me. Nalilimutan ko yung mga stress, that’s why I call it my ‘haven,’” says Doc Nielsen.

Compassion project
“We support the animals with our own resources,” Doc Nielsen says as he shows the many enclosures in the park that the animals call home. He also provides them with nutritious food and medicine to keep them healthy while they’re living in the park.

Feeding time: Violet, a rescued tortoise, snacks on papaya.

He doesn’t do this alone. Apart from the staff he works with, Doc Nielsen’s family also helps. His kids, Cedric and Nina, are studying veterinary medicine, so they’re well on their way to following in their dad’s footsteps.

Giving animals a second chance
While giving a tour of the park, Doc Nielsen stops to feed and pet the animals he passes by. One of them is a bearcat (binturong), a nocturnal mammal with cat-like features that’s endemic to Palawan. Doc Nielsen explains that the bearcats were transported to the park with the help of DENR, and they are raised until they’re ready to be released back into the wild.

I promised that if I ever breed any endemic wildlife animal in the park, my goal is to help repopulate their species and bring them back to their natural habitat,” he says. He also takes time to assess animals who might need medical attention and treat them right away to prevent infections.

Doc Nielsen demonstrates how to bathe a Bayawak,
with his resident monitor lizard, Bruce.

It’s not always easy for Doc Nielsen to let go of animals, especially those that have been used to being around humans. Many of the monkeys, for example, lived in crowded areas and were treated as pets in their past lives. Releasing them back into the wild would be a safety risk for them because a troop of wild monkeys might hurt them.

This is why he and his staff ensure that animals like these get the care they need so they can live a long and healthy life. The wildlife sanctuary is their safe haven until they are ready to be released in a protected space.

Doc Nielsen at the Laguna Wildlife Park & Rescue Center.

Whether it’s at his clinic in the city or the wildlife park in Laguna, Doc Nielsen is always ready to offer his expertise and care to all types of species, no matter how scary they may seem.

I always dreamed of being someone like [British veterinary surgeon] James Harriot. I’ve always wanted to treat dogs and cats, and farm animals as big as horses, goats, and sheep,” he said. “There weren’t exotic animals to treat yet [when I was just starting out.] Now, I’m lucky because I get to treat more exotic animals, as well as farm animals, in my clinic and the park.”

5 Best Aquatic Plants For Your Goldfish.

Every beginner goldfish parent needs these five beginner-friendly aquatic plants for their fish tank or bowl.

In the world of taking care of fish, goldfish is perhaps the most beginner-friendly of all the pet fishes out there. People who want to start raising fish friends will need to set up their fishbowl or aquarium to raise happy and healthy goldfishes.

Even young kids can easily take care of a goldfish.

While plastic fish tank plants are affordable and easy to get, they can be toxic for your fish. Don’t fret because there are affordable aquatic plants you can put in your goldfishes’ tank. Here are five of them:

Anubias
Anubias plants are one of the easiest aquatic plants to take care of. They have bright green leaves and can grow on driftwood or rock. However, you can find unique aquarium planters to secure them and prevent your fish from digging into your plants.

Anubias.

These plants are low-maintenance as they can grow with low light. In turn, you don’t have to worry about installing pricey tank lighting to keep them alive. While they are hardy and easy to care for, anubias plants prefer environments with little to no algae. Regularly clean your tank to keep your fish and plants alive.

Marimo Balls
Marimo balls are cute, puffy green mosses that are popular as pets for some people. While you can raise them as aquatic pets/plant babies, they are great companions for your goldfish. Just place them in your fish or tank to let them grow with your fish.

Marimo Balls.

Marimo balls are pretty small and grow slow. Due to their size, they are suitable plants for smaller fishbowls. People renting apartments in Parañaque can now raise goldfish with a few Marimo ball friends without taking up a lot of space in their bedroom or living area.

Java Fern
Java ferns are another beginner-friendly plant you can put in your goldfishes’ habitat. Their leaves look similar to anubias plants but are longer and slightly narrower. Attach them to driftwood, rocks, or special planter to keep them from moving around your tank or bowl.

Java Fern.

You can also propagate your java ferns to create smaller plants for when you expand your tank. Trim off a leaf or two, let them float in your water vessel, then wait for plantlets to sprout from the ferns’ black spots. You’ll never have to buy new java fern plants for your other goldfish tanks or bowls.

Amazon Sword
If you plan to grow your goldfish in a TV-sized aquarium or a pond, amazon sword plants are excellent greens as decoration and habitat.

Amazon Sword.

Their tall green leaves provide aesthetics and protection for smaller fishes. Note that these plants are pretty tasty for your fish; however, amazon swords grow fast and have a stable root system that prevents any fish from nibbling on them.

Bolbitis Fern
Most aquarium plants have tall, bright green leaves. So if you’re looking for greeneries that look different from the usual fish tank plants, consider getting Bolbitis ferns. They have textured, emerald green leaves, making them unique decorations for your goldfishes’ habitat.

Bolbitis Fern.

Bolbitis ferns require higher water pH and hardiness to thrive. You might also have to invest in tank lighting as these special ferns prefer low to medium light to grow beautifully and healthily.

Overall, choosing the right plants for your goldfishes’ habitat is crucial to their health and survival. These five aquatic plants provide shelter and nutrition for your fish and water and aesthetics for your tank. Check your local pet store and see which plants you can get for your new goldfish kingdom.

Providing the FURfect Love and Protection to Our Dogs.

Our pet dogs bring us unparalleled happiness and joy. They are our adorable and fluffy companions that can effortlessly boost our mood despite all the stresses we deal with on a daily basis.

Thus, for us dog owners, there is nothing more important than the health and safety of our fluffy furball. We always want to give them the best so that they make the most out of their lives while they are with us.

If you're an ARMY, you know who this is. ;)

To help dog owners better take care of their beloved pets, Malayan Insurance conducted the FURfect Love Protection Webinar where Dr. Obet Robles shared insights on how we can tend properly to our fur babies from a veterinarian’s perspective.

Here are five takeaways on looking out for our precious dog’s overall protection.

1. Understand the basic needs of our dog
It is our responsibility as dog owners to understand the basic needs of our pets. These include water and food, shelter, and a good amount of socialization.

When it comes to food, dogs should have a complete and balanced meal which can be found through commercial dog food. This is designed to provide all the nutritional needs of our pets.

Aside from that, we should also be wary of table scraps that are harmful to them such as chocolates, cooked chicken bones, onion and garlic, grapes, raisins, and avocado.

Dr. Robles also mentioned that dogs should be active for at least 30 minutes to two hours every day to ensure that they have enough exercise and to keep them mentally stimulated.

FURFect Love Protection Webinar with Dr. Obet Robles.

2. Trust the Vet
No one will understand us better than veterinarians when it comes to taking care of our pets. They have the knowledge and expertise on how we can keep our dogs out of danger which is why it is necessary to trust your vet.

This means seeking veterinary care to vaccinate them against diseases and have our pets checked when they show symptoms of an illness. Veterinarians can properly diagnose animal health problems which in turn can treat our pet’s suffering.

Dr. Obet Robles in the house!

3. Be wary of common accidents in dogs
Owning a pet was never risk-free, thus, it is important to watch out for the common accidents that could happen to our dogs. These include car accidents, dog fights, and toxicity from food.

These can cause serious injuries to our pets which is why when we meet any of these, make sure to bring them to the nearest veterinarian so they can be treated immediately.

Aside from that, we can also get our dogs insurance protection which can help us manage these uncertainties.

Your fur babies can now be insured, too!

Malayan’s Pet Care Insurance is a 3-in-1 insurance plan for pets and pet owners. It provides coverages such as medical reimbursement for any veterinary treatment, liability coverage, and personal accident (PA) insurance for dog owners.

Medical reimbursement covers up to P300,000 of medical expenses incurred to treat or diagnose the insured dog in case it gets into an accident or acquires sudden illness. The owner’s liability benefit covers damages and costs incurred for any liabilities to third-parties due to the actions of the insured pet such as accidentally attacking other people.

The PA covers the insured dog owner in the event of accidental death, disablement, and dismemberment while the policy is in force.

Dogs qualified under Pet Care have to be between six months to eight years old and currently vaccinated as prescribed by the Philippine Animal Hospital Association (PAHA).

The introduction of an insurance product for pets in the country, specifically for dogs, is part of Malayan Insurance’s plan to produce more innovative products that the company can offer to the general public. It is the company’s way of continuing to push efforts in providing relevant insurance protection to Filipinos in every possible way.

Small, but full of energy.

4. Checking our pets
Dr. Obet advised to ask these three questions to assess the overall health of our dogs: Is my dog eating well? Is it receiving the proper nutrients it needs? Is my dog playing and energetic?

Likewise, there are indicators we can keep in mind which are appetite, body conditioning scoring (BCS), and energy.

For BCS, the ideal appearance of dogs is if their ribs and spine can be easily felt but not necessarily seen. The waist can be seen when viewed from above and the abdomen is not sagging when viewed from the side. Also, it should look normal, ideal, and even muscular.

Lethargy is a sign that there must be something wrong with your pet.

5. Watch out for common disease symptoms
Some common symptoms of diseases in dogs are lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, and respiratory distress. If these signs are observed from our pets, it will be better to have them checked as it might be from a fatal disease.

It can be viral, bacterial, or parasitic diseases if not from the lack of the right nutrition. Some common viral diseases in dogs are canine parvovirus, distemper virus, and Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, for bacterial diseases, pet owners should watch out for the likes of Leptospirosis, blood parasite, Bordetella, Salmonella, or E. Coli bacteria. There are also parasitic infections such as intestinal worms, heartworm, mites, ticks, and fleas.

For nutritional cases, there are diseases that our dogs may get which are urinary problems, bladder stones, diabetes, obesity, and malnutrition.

Bring My Pet to the Vet | Royal Canin's Campaign for Improved Pet Healthcare in the Philippines.

Global leading pet nutrition manufacturer and provider Royal Canin recently launched its Bring My Pet to the Vet (BMPV) campaign as part of its commitment to champion responsible pet ownership among Filipino pet parents. Pet owners across the Philippines can now access over 20,000 free pet checkups and 4,000 BMPV care kits for their furry friends through the Royal Canin Club mobile application, as well as other pet rewards made available on the platform.

Over the past year, more Filipinos are turning to pets as their trusted quarantine companions. However, a survey by Kantar shows that 93% and 50% of cat and dog owners, respectively, do not get their pets checked regularly. The survey also highlights that most owners only bring their pets to the veterinarian for vaccinations and medical procedures, reflecting how wellness checkups are not common in the Philippines.

Have you visited your vet today?

With this, Royal Canin introduced the BMPV campaign to encourage both new and old pet owners to bring their pets to the vet as early and as regular as they can, and understand the importance of pet preventive healthcare and medicalization. The campaign also underlines the role that veterinarians play in Filipinos' pets' lives, as it provides a platform for pet owners to connect with their trusted vet partners and clinics, ultimately building a more connected and engaged pet community in the Philippines.

This year, Royal Canin leverages its mobile platform, the Royal Canin Club app, to strengthen its 2019 Bring My Dog to the Vet (BMDV) campaign and relate to more pet owners nationwide. To claim the free checkup, pet owners just need to claim the free consultation voucher under the mobile application’s rewards, find the nearest clinic in the store locator by selecting the Vet feature, and reach out to the clinics directly to book their appointments for consultation. On the day of their appointment, pet owners need to present their generated checkup QR code on their Royal Canin Club app to avail of the free consultation. Afterward, users are encouraged to complete their post-checkup survey for more amazing perks and rewards in the application.

Cats need some vet care, too!

Royal Canin’s BMPV campaign seeks to redefine its previous campaign, which gave away 3,000 free consultations for Filipino pet owners through the company’s website. Now made available on the Royal Canin Club app, it becomes a culmination of two purposeful pet preventive healthcare campaigns. It hopes to further educate pet owners about the signals to watch out from their pets to guide them and encourage them to work closely with their vets in achieving optimum health for their beloved furry friends.

“We, at Royal Canin, recognize the value of preventive pet healthcare and the important role that our veterinary partners and clinics play in one’s pet’s life. Through our new Bring My Pet to the Vet campaign, we hope to instill this mindset and become a platform for pet owners to build a stronger bond with their veterinarians as we work together to safeguard the health of their pets even during such unprecedented time,” says Adriann Eusebio, Royal Canin Philippines’ Country Director. “We want to highlight how important it is for pet owners to have access to credible and reliable pet information, as we continue to improve our services with our loyal customers and partners giving us actionable insights about pet healthcare along the way.”

Free vet visits - one of the many perks of the Royal Canin Club app.

As the vet checkups require physical visits, Royal Canin ensures everyone that their partner veterinarians and pet shops follow the strict safety protocols of the government when taking in patients and customers. The company works closely with vet clinics to ensure that all pet owners secure appointments first before their visit to avoid overcrowding in their establishments.

“We understand the safety concerns of our partners and customers about going out to visit their vets amid the pandemic. With the lockdowns still in place, our BMPV campaign also ensures to encourage pet owners to become responsible citizens, as much as they are as pet parents, and abide by proper COVID-19 protocols of their vet partners and clinics to avoid the spread of the virus, “ adds Eusebio. “At Royal Canin, we aim to enforce extra precautions to address our customers’ concerns and are committed to improving our services by opening our lines of communication for improvement.”

For more information on Royal Canin’s Bring My Pet to the Vet campaign, pet owners may download the Royal Canin Club application, read about pet healthcare information, and claim their voucher through the platform. One may also visit the Royal Canin Philippines on Facebook and Instagram at @RoyalCaninPH for more details about the Royal Canin Club app and other updates about the brand.

Can Dogs Eat Hemp Seeds – Typically Used For Extraction Of The Oil?

Pet parents pay close attention to their furry companion's dietary health as one of their primary responsibilities. It's not always clear what constitutes safe options and what should be avoided without close contact with the pet's vet and considerable research.

Nutritional health is a key component to the overall functionality of the body. Being deficient in essential nutrients leaves the body and its systems struggling to operate. One compound found to help restore the recommended daily allowance of most of these elements is hemp oil. The substance has been touted as being successful in numerous anecdotal studies with pets.

The products deem safe, organic, and with no known side effects for the puppies. Research is required on the part of the pet parent to obtain the highest standard in products from the best quality companies.

There is a multitude of these online, including Pet Hemp Company, who offer a wide range of formulas meant to make the administration process easy for the pup and the parent. Putting the hemp seeds into a dog's food is probably the most comfortable form of consumption for pup providing the very best nutritional benefit.

Are Hemp Seeds Safe For Dogs To Eat?
Hemp seeds are recommended for a canine's diet, with there being no issue in consuming them. These comprise fatty acids Omega 3 and 6 of perfect proportion meaning there will be no excess fat put into the diet. Maintaining an appropriate balance enhances puppy's wellness and provides a multitude of other advantages.

Skin/Coat: Omega fatty acids play a significant role in a puppy's body, including skin health. These are responsible for skin health, both moisturizing and decreasing instances of itching. The ratio is perfectly proportioned to the point it lowers the chances for skin diseases and promotes a lush, shiny coat with minimal shedding.

Inflammation: Age progression brings cases of osteoarthritis and joint swelling commonly in pups. Many vets' immediate responses are to prescribe painkillers or various other medications, but hemp seeds incorporated into the diet are a natural alternative.

The fatty acids offer anti-inflammatory properties that assist in decreasing the joining pain. The dog's vet will need to make sure a healthy balance is kept as Omega 6 comprises linoleic acid, which has the potential for triggering an inflammatory response. The seeds, however, boast as keeping arthritis at a minimum.

The Heart: Cholesterol and fat can build up in the heart as a result of obesity, which can induce cardiovascular problems. If puppy indulges in these products, they tout as having the potential for maintaining a strong, healthy heart with the number of amino acids contained in them and arginine.

Those elements are responsible for the production of nitric oxide, directly affecting the circulation of blood with dilation and relaxation. Once the vessels are relaxed, the pressure is lower, resulting in increased flow to the heart and other vital organs, leading to better functionality.

Nutrients: The seeds of the hemp plant are virtually a 'powerhouse' of nutrients and antioxidants that enhance your dog's immune system with fiber aiding in healthy digestion. Check this link for nutritional advantages of these and other natural substances being added to a canine's diet.

Calming: Puppies can endure a tremendous amount of stress and anxiety based on our day-to-day activities, whether we leave them alone on a regular or extended period, are stressed to our limits, or perhaps depressed. They read our energy, and it translates to them.

The effects often lead to puppy lashing out, whether it be pottying inside the house, barking excessively, or other unusual behavior. Instead of punishing what is understandable reactions to their surroundings, you may try helping them cope by providing hemp seeds, which boast as offering calming benefits.
V and his Pomeranian, Yeontan! :)
The claim is these tout also to reduce anxieties and decrease stressors making the chaos around the household much more bearable. Get advice on the various aspects of the compounds relating to dogs at https://www.veterinarypracticenews.com/faq-what-you-need-to-know-about-hemp-and-dogs/ .

The Best Canned Food for Dogs.

In 2018, the global pet food sales managed a high of $72b. Of this, the biggest share was brought in by dog food sales. There are hundreds of dog food brands around the globe striving every year to meet an ever ballooning demand. Dry dog food is more popular since it does not require much when it comes to storage, and it also comes in large quantities.

Wet food, on the other hand, has to be canned in small containers that on average, provides a single meal. The food has to be properly sealed by a can seamer to keep contaminants out. Once opened, the food cannot be stored for long.

Canned dog food has the following benefits:

Benefits of Canned Dog Food
1. Canned dog food has more protein compared to dry foods. The high meat content in canned foods is the reason why their cost is higher than kibble diets.

2. Canned dog foods have fewer carbs compared to kibble diets. Dry food has gluten that binds food together like glue, making them more chewy and pliable.

3. There are fewer preservatives in canned dog food because the preservation of the food mainly relies on the airtight seal. The amount of preservatives you can find in canned foods is minimal.

4. Canned food tastes better. Most are wet with juices and water. These preserve the flavors of the dish and act as soups too. Dry foods, on the other hand, are not that palatable.

5. Canned food reduces bloat as it does not absorb too much water from the body like kibble diets. It is also hard to gulp wet food.

Chamomile For Dogs | 3 Benefits You Probably Didn’t Know.

We are all well aware of the amazing properties of chamomile. I bet you have some chamomile tea at home right at this very moment. Why wouldn’t you? Its therapeutic properties and various benefits are more than enough to make you want to drink it every single day. Plus, it does taste pretty great, doesn’t it?

This is why people drink chamomile tea: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320031

I’m not here to talk about all the amazing things that this flower can do for you, though. It’s time we concentrated on someone other than ourselves. It’s time we paid some attention to our four-pawed, barking friends. Given how affectionate, loyal and loving they are, they really deserve our undivided attention, don’t they? We make sure to give them the best foods and treats from chicken dog food to beef liver bites, so why not think about how they feel overall and help them remain calm day in and day out.

If you thought that feeding your pup regularly and taking it out for frequent walks is enough to make it happy and well, I suggest you think again. There’s more to their feelings and needs that meets the eye. There’s also more to chamomile that meets the eye. Have you ever even thought of using “dogs” and “chamomile” in the same sentence?

A dog. And chamomile flowers. :)

In case it has never crossed your mind that this flower could be rather helpful for your little companions, you should use this day to do some research on that topic. The things you will find will probably amaze you and lead you towards making a very important decision of giving your pup chamomile. An idea that might seem strange at first will quickly turn into the best idea you’ve had in a while.

Before you go any further, though, and decide to make some purchases, I suppose you do want to know what it is that chamomile can do for your dogs. That’s the right way to go. Doing research before buying just anything is the right step towards buying the perfect thing. Since we’re researching chamomile today, if you continue reading, you’ll get to find out about how our dogs can benefit from it. Let us get started.

It Soothes Their Upset Stomach
When you notice that your pup is having abdominal issues, you are definitely eager to try and find a solution. An upset stomach can be very irritating for a dog. It can cause pain, vomiting and diarrhea, among other things. Gastrointestinal issues are rather common among canines and I am sure that, if there’s a way to help, every owner will jump on that opportunity.

Here’s a thought. Why not try chamomile products? This flower is praised for its calming properties and research has shown that it can soothe our dogs’ upset stomachs, which leads to the reduction of symptoms like vomiting, pain and diarrhea. Don’t take my word for it, try it out yourself.

It Reduces Anxiety
Whether you want to admit it or not, your canine can get anxious too. This disorder is not reserved for humans only, so you need to understand that most of our animals can also suffer from anxiety. Similarly, chamomile is also net reserved for humans only, which is why you shouldn’t deprive your pets of its amazing properties.

If you notice signs of anxiety in your dog, you should try to find a way to calm them down, instead of panicking right there with them. One of the perfect ways to calm them down is, you’ve guessed it right, chamomile. This flower will get your pup more relaxed and at ease. While it cannot exactly cure anxiety for good, it can definitely relieve the symptoms, which will help your canine lead a higher-quality life.

It Treats Skin Issues
Skin irritations can be rather annoying, especially the ones that never seem to disappear, no matter how hard you try to fight them. You’ve tried everything you could think of and your dog still keeps scratching that one inflamed patch of the skin. It appears that there really is nothing you could possibly do about it and help the poor animal.

Instead of simply giving up, you should try to apply chamomile on the inflamed spot. It can be perfect for treating flea bites, allergies and even certain bacterial or fungi skin infections. Once again, its soothing properties are responsible for resolving the skin issues and help your doggie heal.
