Every day is National Fried Chicken Day!

Happy Fried Chicken Day!
Just in case you didn’t know, July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day! This is the one day solely dedicated to the crispy, golden, and delicious fried chicken that Filipinos dearly love. Although there is no curated historical information on how fried chicken really started in the Philippines, it is undeniable that fried chicken is one of Filipinos’ comfort food, loved by kids (case in point, my son, niece, and nephew) and the kids at heart (ehem, that would be me, my siblings, and my cousins).

Chicken is not only delicious but also nutritious because it is a good source of protein and has Vitamin B12 which supports bone health and red blood cell formation.

And what's the best way to cook friend chicken? Of course, it's with the Philippines' #1 fried chicken essential - Crispy Fry®! Crispy Fry® has a wide array of product offering specially made to deliver delicious fried dishes to perfection.

Spicy Fried Chicken with Gravy
Heat things up and add some spicy flare to your fried chicken. Try Crispy Fry® Breading Mix Spicy variant and enjoy fried chicken with perfect crispness and hotness.

To complement, you may pair it with the new Crispy Fry® Gravy Mix. So easy to prepare. Just mix water and Crispy Fry® Gravy Mix in a bowl, then pour the gravy sauce into a pot and simmer until thickened. And viola! Your homemade fried chicken and gravy are ready for your enjoyment.

Battered Fried Chicken
If you’re the type who likes southern-style fried chicken, thicker and fuller with extra crunch, try Crispy Fry® Batter Mix.

So simple to prepare. In a bowl, combine the batter pack of the Crispy Fry® Batter Mix with water then mix well. On a separate plate, pour the contents of the breading mix. Coat each chicken with batter mix and then roll evenly one by one on the breading.

In a pot with heated oil, deep-fry the chicken pieces for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown. Drain excess oil using a strainer or colander and you’re all set to enjoy fuller fried chicken with extra crispiness!

Fried Chicken Burger
Who says fried chicken can only be enjoyed with rice? This recipe is so easy to prepare and perfect as quick lunch or merienda.

First, coat the chicken thigh fillet with Crispy Fry® Original Breading Mix evenly and fry for 10 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown. Next, prepare the sauce by combining mayonnaise and garlic in a bowl. Then assemble, on a burger bun, put lettuce, tomato, cucumber, fried chicken, and 2 teaspoons of mayo-garlic sauce.

Make Time To Be A Dad | Luis Manzano's Thoughts on Fatherhood.

Fatherhood is one of life’s greatest blessings but along with it comes great responsibility, perhaps the greatest in any man's life. It is a role which nobody can really prepare for 100%.

Now a first-time dad, Luis Manzano shares his new journey of being a father to Peanut. Although he is famous for his funny jokes and punchlines (after all, he is a comedian aside from being an actor and TV host), Luis takes his daddy role very seriously.

Photo credit: Luis Manzano on Instagram.

“Being a Dad, it’s truly a surreal feeling," Luis candidly shared. "I don’t think one can ever be prepared on being a parent. It’s easy to say that you’re ready, you’re set, na lahat kayang- kaya, but once na andiyan na talaga, it’s something you work for each day.”

One major adjustment for Luis as a first-time father is having another top priority in life. Before, his wife Jessy and his work are his priorities, but now Luis makes sure to not simply have quality time with Peanut but also quantity of time even if it means he has to sacrifice some other things. Luis’ Daddy duties are mangulit during playtime with Peanut, reading her books, and putting her to sleep sometimes.

When asked what his advice for other first-time Dads is, Luis shared, “There is no one formula on being a dad, each child is different so each one deserves their own brand of fatherhood. A realization for me from my Dad is that its not simply about quality of time. Madami ang nagsasabi na its always about quality not quantity. No, I think quantity is also as important as quality. And of course, be healthy. We want to spend time with our children. Specially, if nabigyan ka ng blessing na medyo may edad ka na. There are so many things we want to do with them. For that, you need to eat right and to get proper rest.”

Luis Manzano for Ajinomoto Crispy Fry.

Dads play an active role in caring for children and it’s essential to keep up their energy levels. That’s why protein is crucial to the diet. It boosts the immune system and helps the body function the way you need it to.

Struggling to prep protein meals due to time constraints? Check out Ajinomoto Crispy Fry® breading mix! It’s so easy to use, just coat and fry, and in no time, you’ll have crispy delicious protein-packed fried chicken or even fried fish.

Being a new parent is truly a challenge, but raising a family is also one of the best jobs out there! Remember Luis’s advice and take the time to get to spend time with your child, play with them, prioritize them, and be there for them no matter what. Do that and you’ll do great.

Take care of yourself, eat well and live well with the people you love.

Be Careful with your Hearts.

Did you know: aside from being known as the month of love, February is also Philippine Heart Month. The yearly celebration aims to promote cardiovascular health and wellness.

As part of its continuing mission to help Filipinos live well, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC Group) has teamed up with lifestyle doctor Dr. Dex Macalintal in promoting healthy heart education by providing easy and simple ways to keep the heart in tip top shape.

Dr. Dex Macalintal, a registered nutritionist dietitian in practice for about 10 years and a licensed physician for 4 years, shared that Filipinos should practice, “heart above all.”

He noted that when our hearts malfunction, our actions will be limited and so will our productivity. Dr. Dex also highlighted that our hearts help us orchestrate how blood flows in the body which helps our other organs function properly.

In the Philippines, heart disease is the leading cause of death. In 2022, Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that over 9,000 Filipinos succumbed to ischaemic heart diseases and over 4,000 died due to cerebrovascular diseases.

Together with Dr. Dex, we want to share how Filipinos can take better care of their hearts by encouraging healthy eating habits and improving our physical health,” APC Group General Manager Corporate Planning and Public Relations Roann Co said.

Tip #1: Do not smoke, never smoke, or If you smoke, QUIT. NOW.
Studies have proven that chemicals in cigarettes put the heart at risk of heart diseases. Blockage from a clot can lead to a heart attack and to some extent sudden death.

Tips #2 & #3: Exercise regularly and maintain your weight.
Dr. Dex recommends having at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise daily to help achieve our ideal body weight to minimize the risk of hypertension and stroke.

Tip #4: Keep a balanced diet.
A diet rich in vegetables, less fat, and less in sodium has already been proven to reduce blood pressure and blood cholesterol which are known culprits for putting your hearts at risk of diseases. Dr. Dex shares “Kaya naman, having a balanced diet is very essential in taking care of our health. Mainam na malaman kung gaano karami lamang ang pwedeng kainin so that our weight will be in the ideal range, putting us at the safe zone from lifestyle related diseases.”

To help Filipinos take better care of their heart health, APC Group launched its BawAsin® campaign which aims to help homecooks serve less sodium dishes. One practical way is to lessen the usage of salt and use AJI-NO-MOTO® Umami Seasoning. AJI-NO-MOTO® Umami Seasoning contains only 1/3 amount of sodium compared to table salt, sodium intake can be reduced by up to 40% while maintaining overall deliciousness of food.

The goal of the BawAsin® Campaign is to reduce salt intake which is a preventive move to reduce risks of heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. Creating less sodium and balanced meals through this campaign can help our community decrease the cases of heart disease and other non-communicable diseases,” Dr. Dex said, “Our continuous exposure to processed foods that are very rich in sodium and salt can put one at risk of these lifestyle-related diseases. Reducing salt and sodium intake just by ½ can be very helpful in the long run,” he added.

The BawAsin® or Bawasan ang Asin campaign is a reflection of the brand’s “Eat Well, Live Well” promise, which aims to help families improve their health by providing ways on how to prepare healthy and delicious meals. These initiatives are in line with the company's ultimate goal of extending the life expectancy of 1 billion people.

With one simple step such as reducing sodium intake can help us take better care of our heart and overall health. With the tips shared by Dr. Dex and the recipes from our BawAsin campaign, we can live a healthier lifestyle while making sure we have delicious meals every single time,” said Co.

Quick and easy tips for a sulit and sustainable holiday season!

Filipinos are known to celebrate the longest and grandest holiday season. More often than not, this comes at an economic and environmental expense, having to spend more on food and gifts - but it doesn’t always have to be like that. Having an affordable and sustainable celebration can be an option and a great way for families to bond together.

Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC Group) shares a few tips on how Filipinos can have a meaningful holiday season- the budget-friendly and eco-friendly way. APC Group General Manager of Corporate Planning and Public Relations Roann Co said, “We, at Ajinomoto, believe that there is no small contribution when it comes to caring for the environment. Through our tips below, we hope to empower Filipinos in giving the gift of sustainability this holiday season.”

Here are some eco-friendly and meaningful ways to celebrate the holidays:

1. Recycled gift wraps and Do-It-Yourself gifts
Using old magazines and newspapers as an alternative gift wrapper isn’t a new practice to Filipinos. But, it is definitely something that we should further encourage among our families and friends. Not only does it help the environment, it is also easy on the pocket too!

Moreover, if you’re still wondering what gifts you should give, you can check some of the winning DIY projects during the online contest for Ilabas ang SustainAbilidad campaign such as the apron made from the wrappers of used Ajinomoto products and a DIY toy kitchen set for kids who want to learn to cook. You can also try re-inventing some of the projects to make it more creative and more heart-felt.

2. Solar-powered string lights
Christmas decorations are incomplete without bright lights at home and on streets. Retire your vintage decors by using solar-powered lights which give you the same merry evenings with less electricity consumption and environmental impact. And since these solar-powered decors don’t add to your electricity bill, you may also consider maintaining this type of ambient lights on your garden and terraces.

Beyond homes, Ajinomoto has also introduced solar energy to its Bulacan factory and it is projected to offset around 865 metric tons of carbon dioxide which is equivalent to reducing 2,352,456 miles in vehicle travel per year.

3. Prepare delicious, nutritious, and eco-friendly holiday meals
What makes Filipino holidays special is the variety of food options planned and prepared by home cooks. Bring out the flavor of your favorite handaan dishes like Pinoy spaghetti, lumpiang shanghai, adobo, kaldereta, and more with the new AJI-NO-MOTO® Umami Seasoning 45g paper pack. The new packaging is made from a natural paper material that can be planted, grown, harvested, and then replanted which means you’re not only preparing delicious food for the family but also helping the environment.

Here are some holiday recipe ideas you may try:

Instead of buying salty potato chips as an appetizer for your guests this Christmas, why not try making your own chips at home? These Pasta Chips recipe can turn your typical soft pasta into a crispy delight that’s also less sodium, thanks to AJI-NO-MOTO®! Just deep-fry sliced and cooked lasagna sheets in a pan with oil. Drain excess oil using a strainer. While hot, immediately sprinkle some grated parmesan cheese and AJI-NO-MOTO® Umami Seasoning for that added umami-goodness.

New pasta dish to impress! Savor the delicious kick from Cajun and the savory goodness of AJI-NO-MOTO® Umami Seasoning. Heat oil and melt butter in a pot. Add the chicken pieces then cook until golden brown. Chicken breast is a great source of lean Protein to help build strong muscles. Add the onions, tomatoes, French beans then cook for 3 minutes. Toss together the cooked penne pasta. To ensure an al dente texture or slightly firm pasta, cook pasta one minute less than the package instructions. Drain then you may opt to drizzle a little bit of olive oil to avoid the pasta from sticking together. Season with cream cheese and your homemade Cajun spice mix – smoked paprika powder, dried oregano, dried thyme, AJI-NO-MOTO® Umami Seasoning, and cayenne powder. Mix and cook for 3-5 minutes. Transfer to a plate then garnish with spring onions. This is another pasta dish that is complete with Go, Grow, and Glow Foods!

APC Group’s campaign for sustainability is part of its Ajinomoto Group creating shared value (ASV) framework which directs the company to realize greater wellness for people around the world through thoughtful business activities focusing on health and the environment.

This holiday season, may we have more food to share and gifts to give. And more importantly, may the spirit of giving extend towards caring for the environment,” Co said.

Ajinomoto launches Sustansarap, Sustansaya! online nutrition classes for nutritious, delicious and enjoyable meals.

Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) recently launched Sustansarap, Sustansaya!, a series of online nutrition classes and cooking demonstrations, through a Facebook Live on Cookmunity by Ajinomoto page. The project aims to help Filipinos improve their nutrition knowledge and cooking skills with the help of food experts. It is set to run on a quarterly basis on the brand’s official Facebook page.

We, at Ajinomoto, believe that nutrition education is vital in taking care of our families’ health. However, for most, nutrition information can be intimidating and difficult to understand. With day-to -day busy schedule of homemakers and budget limitation, we understand that nutrition usually takes a step back when preparing meals. Sustansarap, Sustansya! makes nutrition information fun, simple, accessible and proves that easy, affordable, nutritious, and delicious meals are possible, especially with the help of Ajinomoto products,” said Roann Co, Ajinomoto General Manager of Corporate Planning and Public Relations.

Sustansarap, Sustansaya! BawAsin Natin Key Speakers.

Class #1: BawAsin Natin! (Delicious Salt Reduction)

The livestream launch features the first Sustansarap, Sustansaya! online class titled “BawAsin Natin.” The pilot session focused on delicious salt reduction wherein health and nutrition experts Dr. Dex Macalintal and Bea Menorca, RND shed light on the adverse effect of excessive sodium intake in our health and why it is important to reduce salt intake. They shared a practical tip that it is not difficult or costly to reduce sodium in daily meal preparation. One easy way is lessen teaspoon salt and use monosodium glutamate (MSG). MSG contains only 1/3 amount of sodium compared to table salt. With MSG, sodium intake can be reduced by up to 40% while maintaining overall deliciousness of food.

“It is important to know that high blood pressure or hypertension can cause complications such as stroke, heart failure, heart attack, and kidney failure. Among the factors is the frequent consumption of foods high in sodium. According to the World Health Organization, the recommended sodium intake per day is below 2000 mg. But for Filipinos, the actual intake is more than twice this recommendation. One way to reduce sodium intake is reducing intake of salty foods.” shared Dr. Macalintal, Lifestyle Medicine Specialist.

“To help and encourage Filipinos to clear their worries and struggle on practice of salt reduction, the BawAsin® campaign was started by APC. It aims to share how it is important to reduce sodium intake for our health and not sacrificing the taste and deliciousness of our meals,” said Menorca, APC Specialist - Science Communication.

For more information, checkout BawAsin® section in APC’s official website. The site features 100 less sodium creative recipes that help individuals enjoy meals that contain less sodium yet enjoying same deliciousness.

More Flavor, Less Salt.

Filipino cuisine uses a wide range of healthy and nutritious ingredients, however most pinoy dishes use generous amounts of salt, soy sauce, fish sauce, or bagoong to achieve full flavor. In addition to this, Pinoys also love salty dipping sauces or sawsawan. Unfortunately, the flavor that brings the yum in Filipino dishes may be a key ingredient that is putting people’s heart and health at risk.

That’s because too much salt leads to excessive sodium intake, which has been linked to many illnesses such as heart diseases, stroke, and kidney diseases. In fact, Filipinos’ average salt consumption per day is 11 grams (4,263 milligrams of sodium). This is more than the recommended 5 grams of salt (or less than 2,000 milligrams of sodium) daily by the World Health Organization (WHO).

To help address the issue, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) Group recently launched its BawAsin or Bawasan ang Asin campaign, an effort that encourages consumers to reduce their sodium intake without sacrificing the deliciousness of their meals.

Less Sodium, Happier Heart
Our heart works non-stop to keep us going, so we need to take a good look at the condition of our heart and give it the attention and love it deserves. And people can start with consuming less salt in their diets.

Ajinomoto’s new BawAsin section in its official website contains less sodium hacks as well as more than 100 less sodium recipes to help Filipinos in their pursuit of keeping a healthy and hearty diet. One of the main tips suggested is to substitute 1 teaspoon of salt with the combination of ½ teaspoon of salt and ½ tablespoon of MSG. This simple step allows for reducing sodium content by up to 40% while maintaining the flavor.

Many people remain apprehensive of reducing their salt intake because of the notion and misconception that less salt results in bland-tasting or less flavorful food. This is far from the truth,” said APC Science Communication Specialist Beatrice Menorca, RND. “Based on a study entitled ‘Determining acceptability of a less sodium recipe with umami seasoning’ participants of the study actually preferred the less sodium recipes over regular recipes. This only proves that it is possible to cook delicious food with less sodium. It’s quite easy too, as there are healthier alternatives to make food rich in flavor without adding too much salt,” Menorca said.

APC Group’s BawAsin or Bawasan ang Asin campaign was also launched in a Webinar Series that was held in partnership with the Nutritionist-Dietitians Association of the Philippines. APC Group and NDAP’s Webinar Series enjoined nutrition experts and students to help spread the word about the importance of taking care of health, through healthy and nutritious food.

The first webinar entitled, ‘Invest in your health be better in 2022’, discussed how people can invest in improving their immune system by consuming healthy and nutritious food. Another webinar entitled ‘More flavor, less salt: Delicious salt reduction’ covered the effects of excessive salt intake on people’s health and how Filipinos can make food delicious with lesser salt intake.

The BawAsin or Bawasan ang Asin campaign is a reflection of the brand’s “Eat Well, Live Well” promise, which aims to help families improve their health by providing ways on how to prepare healthy and delicious meals. These initiatives are in line with the company's ultimate goal of extending the life expectancy of 1 billion people.

“It’s amazing how one simple step—reducing sodium intake—can bring about so many benefits for the heart and our overall health. We must do every little thing that would help us live a healthier lifestyle, while making sure we have delicious meals every single time,” said Roann Co, APC General Manager of Marketing and Public Relations. AJI-GINISA® marks 30 years of gisa goodness in the Philippines.

It’s been 30 years since AJI-GINISA® was first introduced in the Philippines. As the first flavor seasoning in the country that provides complete gisa deliciousness, AJI-GINISA® changed the way Filipinos cook sumptuous homemade meals for their families.

Three decades ago, AJI-GINISA® brought the gisa taste of garlic, onion, meat, and seasonings in an easy-to-use package. Today, as the well-loved flavor seasoning turns 30, the Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) Group proudly launches a new and improved version—now made ‘more meaty, more gisa' in an 8g pack retailing only P3.00 (SRP).

“We are grateful to be a kitchen staple in Filipino household for the past 30 years. It’s both humbling and a delight to know that AJI-GINISA® plays an important part of families’ bond over delicious food. With the improved Aji-Ginisa®, we wish that more families, especially the young ones, to eat nutritious meals, which should do wonders in these challenging times,” said Roann Co, Ajinomoto General Manager of Marketing and Public Relations.

Zia Dantes for AJI-GINISA®.

As part of the celebration, the APC Group is also excited to welcome the newest member of the Ajinomoto family: Zia Dantes, the adorable daughter of the brand’s long-time brand ambassador and superstar Marian Rivera-Dantes.

Zia is the perfect endorser for the new and improved AJI-GINISA®, as she embodies the brand’s mission of encouraging fellow kids to eat nutritious, yummy food, made possible through AJI-GINISA®. It’s fitting to have the mother-and-daughter tandem of Marian and Zia as they capture what AJI-GINISA® has been doing for years—making it easier for parents to have their kids eat more vegetables.

AJI-GINISA® - a kitchen staple for 30 years.

Launched in 1991, the AJI-GINISA® has always been the “secret ingredient” that makes any stir-fried vegetable meal taste appealing to kids and adults alike. With just a few sprinkles of AJI-GINISA®, ordinary veggies become extraordinary dishes. The reason behind this is the product’s powdered form that makes it easier to apply to any dish. While AJI-GINISA® is perfect for stir-fried dishes, it is also perfect for fried rice, fried egg, and fried fish among others. Its recent quality improvement will also give you improved overall deliciousness or ‘umami’, stronger gisa taste and enhanced meaty taste.

AJI-GINISA®’s 30th year in the country is reflective of the brand’s strong “Eat Well, Live Well” promise, helping Filipinos enjoy nutritious and delicious meals through the years. With the new and improved AJI-GINISA®, the brand also hopes to enjoin more families, especially kids, to live a healthier lifestyle.

Gisa goodness with AJI-GINISA®!

What an amazing 30 years it has been for AJI-GINISA®. We are humbled to have been embraced by Filipino homes through the delicious meals that AJI-GINISA® helped cook. We look forward to being part of more memorable and happy moments for the family around the dinner table,” Co shared.
