How to Teach Your Child to be a Responsible User of Social Media.

In this day and age of modern technology, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives. The latest studies show that 4.62 billion people now use social media, and roughly 6% of it comprises young people. Approximately 277 million kids below 18 years old share their thoughts on Facebook, post photos on Instagram, retweet memes on Twitter, and upload videos on Tiktok for friends, family, and even strangers to see.

For most kids and teens, social media is an avenue to achieve a sense of belonging. It’s a space in the digital world where they can have fun, make new friends and connect with old ones, share interests and explore new hobbies. It’s an area where your kids can expand their knowledge, explore their creativity, and enhance their well-being. However, along with the benefits of using social media come to its risks, and cyberbullying is one of them.

Cyberbullying is defined as “bullying with the use of digital technologies.” It is repeated behavior that aims to scare, shame, or anger its target and can take place not only on social media but also on messaging apps, gaming platforms, and mobile phones. The more addicted a child or a teenager is to social media, the more likely they are to be exposed to cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is no joke, and its effects on children are no laughing matter. It can trigger different negative emotions and cause health issues for children. At such a young developing age, dealing with such emotions can be unstable. Moreover, its effect can also manifest physically, such as constantly feeling tired due to loss or lack of sleep, or even symptoms such as headaches and stomach aches. In extreme cases, cyberbullying can even push children to take their own lives.

As parents, we play a pivotal role in preventing and responding to cyberbullying. Here are some ways how to teach our kids to be responsible social media users and help them stay safe from cyberbullying:

Respect begets respect
As with all relationships, whether it’s face to face or online, respect for one’s self and other people is very important. Encourage your child to treat others respectfully – no insulting or humiliating people on social media or creating and sharing nasty images of someone else, remind them to the common trolling dangers found online and that by treating people nicely, they are more likely to do the same in return.  Similarly, teach your child to block or unfriend people who do not treat them with respect.

Protect your privacy
Teach your child the importance of privacy settings. Explain to them that they can only share as much personal information as necessary on their social media sites and reiterate the importance of passwords in safeguarding them from identity theft.

Think before you click
Remind your child that what they post on the internet can be used against them. Make them understand the consequence of uploading content on social media, such as photos and videos, and how these posts will become part of their permanent online reputation. Explain to them that once you upload or post something on the internet, it will be there forever, and this may not be what they want on the internet.

Stranger danger
This rule is pretty simple, something kids should follow in real life. Don’t befriend strangers. If you don’t know them, don’t add them or engage in a conversation with them. Remind them always to be wary of the people they meet or come across online because, in the virtual world, not everyone is who they say they are.

Lead by example
Show your child how you use social media respectfully and healthfully. Talk about your social media habits and how you interact with other people online. Promote netiquette and reiterate the importance of being polite and courteous. As social media platforms evolve, their reach will expand, and their impact on our lives will be more significant and intertwined.

As parents, it is our duty to guide and supervise our kids as they explore the digital world. It is our responsibility to know what our kids do online because this is the first and the best way to protect them from cyberbullying.

The Art of Choosing the Right Movie.

It happens to the best of us. Bored at the movie theater, yawning incessantly, sometimes wanting for the movie to end as soon as possible. There are many reasons why we could have been in such situations; more often than not it is because our companion - be it your date or your friends - persuade us to watch it. Once, I have even pulled out my phone during the movie to play online bingo. Sneakily of course.

In choosing the right movie, there are certain things you need to keep in mind. Going to watch a certain movie without knowing anything about it can probably ruin the whole experience, as it can be too much of a surprise.
By doing a bit of research on what the movie is about, you can get a better picture of whether you will like it or not. Include online movie rating sites such as IMDb (Internet Movie Database) into your research and check for their ratings as it is among the best known sites for movie reviews. Similar to IMDb, there are many online review sites that can give you a good insight. The internet is the best source for all the information that you may need regarding any movie. Basing your decision entirely on how a trailer looks like will only give you half the picture. The movie might end up being completely different.

If you are going to watch a movie with your significant other, you need to bear in mind his/ her interests as well. Otherwise, he/she would get bored easily and that can ruin the whole experience for you, too. You could check beforehand which genre he/she likes most and pick out a movie of the same category, or could even take into consideration their favorite actors, directors, or producers.

The next step is choosing a theater and the time to go. If there is a place that you regularly go to, then go at a time that you know has a lesser number of people. Also take into consideration know the audio and video quality of the cinema you are going to. For movies with really good visual effects, these are certainly worth watching in a huge screen with 3D glasses on while enjoying a bucket of buttered pop corn.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg: Partnership with Globe is a 'homerun'.

A few days ago, the Mobile World Conference - the  biggest annual convention in the mobile industry - happened in Barcelona, Spain with Mark Zuckerberg as its keynote speaker. And in his speech, the Facebook CEO and founder commended Globe Telecom for being a pioneer in providing free internet service in the Philippines.

Internet.org is a partnership, it’s an industry coalition working together to make the internet and the different parts of it more efficient. For everyone to have access to it for a really affordable price or free is the real goal for basic internet services. In the Philippines, for example, we’ve been working with Globe, and what we’ve seen in the Philippines is the number of people who are using internet and data has doubled. It’s a homerun, it’s going really well. We delivered this product, where basically, in partnership with them [Globe], there’s free basic services with upsells. We’re starting off with Facebook and Messenger, the next version we’re going to do is more basic services,” shared Zuckerberg in his keynote.
Mark Zuckerberg speaking before a packed audience at the Mobile World Conference.
Internet.org is a global collaboration among technology leaders, nonprofit organizations, local communities and experts who are working together to bring the internet to the vast majority of the world’s population.

Sharing tools, resources and best practices, Internet.org partners will explore solutions in three major opportunity areas: affordability, efficiency and business models. The Philippines became a test bed for Zuckerberg’s vision, brought to life through leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom offering free Facebook access to its over 38 million customers, in close partnership with Silicon Valley-based Facebook engineers.

Once again, Globe has proven that it is the mobile data service provider of choice by industry and technology leaders around the world with this breakthrough partnership with Facebook to give our customers uninterrupted, seamless, and worry-free Free Facebook experience. This is collaboration at its peak, which has resulted in the best and most innovative Free Facebook experience yet,” said Peter Bithos, Chief Operating Advisor at Globe Telecom.
Globe CEO Ernest Cu and Peter Bithos with Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook headquarters.
Available to all Globe Telecom customers using feature phones and smartphones and accessing either through the mobile site of Facebook or the Facebook app, users can post, like, comment, chat, add friends, upload photos, share posts, and more on Facebook without the need for Wi-Fi services.

Aside from offering Facebook at zero data charges, the collaboration between the two global companies has also paved the way for Globe to put together innovation that covers key milestones in the customer experience journey such as availability of access on feature phones and smartphones across all Facebook mobile platforms whether via the Facebook app or the m.facebook.com; proactive notification if the customer will incur data charges once a link that leads out of Facebook is clicked; and one-click registration to the data plan of choice to continue browsing without having to leave the site. Recommended data plans consider a subscriber’s available prepaid balance and/or megabytes (MB) balance of existing data plan.

The Free Facebook service, which was initially offered for three (3) months paved the way for the Philippine telecom company to double its mobile data user base. Mobile browsing and other data revenues also increased to P11.6 billion as of end-2013, up 42% from P8.2 billion in 2012.

The offer also formed part of the company’s mobile data strategy to grow the number of users who access the Internet on their mobile phones, as well as provide a seamless customer experience with service innovations that address the fear of mobile internet. Now, more than 1% of Facebook users worldwide are using Free Facebook on Globe.

Citing strong demand and customer take-up for one of its biggest promos to date, Globe Telecom is extending its Free Facebook offer until April 30, 2014.

Globe cements leadership with highest industry growth in broadband business.

Sick of all the bad news that you see on TV, in the papers, and in social media? Here's a bit of good news for a change. :)

Globe Telecom, through its broadband brand Tattoo, maintained its leadership in the Philippine broadband industry with its flagship on-the-go and home broadband services after posting double-digit increases in both revenues and subscriber base as of end-September 2013.

Broadband revenues leapt 22% from P6.3 billion to P7.8 billion year-on-year, the highest in the industry, on the back of the market’s positive response to Tattoo’s wide portfolio of wireless and wired broadband products that were made more affordable and relevant to subscribers. Tattoo closed the first nine months of the year with 1.9 million broadband subscribers, up by 15% from last year’s 1.6 million, with both wired and wireless subscriber bases registering growths of 17% and 14% respectively.

We are happy to sustain momentum of our broadband business with game-changing offers that provide fast internet connectivity, may it be mobile or at home broadband services,” said Gilbert Simpao, Head of Broadband Business at Globe. “As we’re starting to reap the benefits of our new modern network, we will remain focused on finding new ways to delight our customers and provide them with new broadband innovations.”

Robust growth in the broadband business resulted from aggressive acquisitions campaigns, attractive pricing offers and product bundles. This positive response and sustained growth was a product of the company’s continued push to expand its product portfolio and its awareness of the customers’ evolving and increasing demands for nomadic and home broadband services such as the more affordable Tattoo Prepaid 4G SuperStick at P1995 alongside Tattoo Postpaid’s more personalized and consumable plans with increased surfing speeds now up to 42 Mbps delivered by the telco’s growing and expanding Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.

The Tattoo Prepaid LTE devices were also launched with the mobile Wi-Fi variant at the forefront as it doubles as a powerbank with 3000mAh capacity. LTE Postpaid plans are also offered starting at Plan 1299 which comes with a FREE LTE dongle or, for a one-time fee of P 2000, upgrade to a mobile Wi-Fi device.

True to its customer-focused strategy, Tattoo introduced its first rewards program called Tattoo+ Rewards, where qualified subscribers earn rewards points and freebies by subscribing, loading and using Tattoo services. Tattoo also launched the revolutionary Tablet Revolution bannering the most affordable tablet bundles where subscribers get three free devices -- Skyworth S73 tablet or a Cloudpad 705W, a Blackberry Curve 9220 and the country’s fastest broadband Wi-Fi stick which can power up to 10 devices, all starting only at Plan 1298. Other Tattoo tablet bundles are also made available with varying numbers of free browsing hours starting at Plan 598.

Tattoo Home Broadband also offered its enhanced product bundles with high-speed internet, free landline, and free unlimited landline to mobile (Globe and TM) call services. Broadband bundles were unveiled such as Plan 1099 at 1 Mbps, Plan 1299 at 2 Mbps, Plan 1599 at 3 Mbps, Plan 2299 at 5 Mbps, Plan 3999 at 10 Mbps and Plan 4999 at 15 Mbps. Meanwhile, internet-only plans that connect at 3 and 5 Mbps were made available at Plan 999 and 1999 respectively, both with unlimited internet access.

To date, over 80% of the network is already on 4G HSPA+ providing faster mobile browsing experience for customers, complementing the pilot LTE deployments in key business districts. Nearly 900 Long Term Evolution (LTE) sites in key cities and holiday destinations are now operational. At the same time, Globe continues to enhance its Service Quality with the continuing optimization and capacity upgrade of its modern network.

5 Reasons Kids Need Access to the Internet.

It can be tricky as a parent keeping your children up to date with the modern world without them getting too involved with their technology. However, use of the internet can be key to their development. So, take a look at broadband packages from Virgin Media and see how useful it can be for you.

Homework
Gone are the days where homework amounted to writing an essay in your notebook or working out sums on some graph paper. The internet is a vital tool for modern children’s homework they can email work to and from school and can connect to their school’s online system for bringing up their schedule and to get extra help from teachers.

Socializing
Spending time with friends these days isn’t limited to popping round their house after school or kicking a ball around the park. Of course, these are still a huge part of your child’s life but another way they can chat and have fun with friends is online. It’s understandable if you are reluctant but talking online does not have to be via unregulated chat rooms – online messengers to chat just with friends are the way forward.
The little man and my princess niece. :)
Fun
Playing games is one of the main things that children have to think about. What game to play? Where to play it and when? The answer can be as simple as an account on a safe online gaming website. A set amount of time playing online games with or without friends is a different and exciting way for your child to get the enjoyment he or she requires. You can even supervise if you like.

Freedom
Independence and freedom are important for your kids as they grow up. This doesn’t mean putting them outside and leaving them to it but a bit of time alone without supervision will aid your child’s development. A short amount of time spent browsing the internet can be really useful with this. After all, you can block unsafe websites which means you can leave your little ones to browse the internet safely.

Learning
We all know how important it is for your children to keep learning, whatever they do. With the internet, this can be done just by browsing or by using specific websites dedicated to studying. Look around at what might be useful for your kid and set them up with some time for study online.
