2025 Book Nook Conference | Uniting and Nurturing the Reading Culture.

Over 80 reading space advocates, storytellers, and educators across the Philippines gathered for the annual Book Nook Conference 2025, organized by the National Book Development Board (NBDB).

The conference, held from August 20-22, aimed to consolidate the best practices as well as challenges faced by area coordinators for The Book Nook Project, a flagship program by the NBDB which aims to address the country’s reading crisis by setting up reading and storytelling spaces across the Philippines. Themed Sug-álaw: A Grand Encounter of Stories, Cultures, and Communities, the three-day event discussed the best sustainability practices and community-building tips to ensure book accessibility in different regions of the country.

Almost four years since its launch, The Book Nook Project has expanded its presence in different regions of the country. Over 100 Book Nook sites are currently established in various provinces, cities, and barangays, with more than 20 additional sites to be unveiled this year.

The Book Nook Project has always been committed to making quality books more accessible not just in urban centers, but also in the most remote reaches of the country,” said NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade.

The first two days of the conference included sessions and workshops centered on strengthening and digitalizing Book Nook services in the regions as well as developing effective literary engagements. For the third day of the conference, Book Nook area coordinators joined a two-part cultural tour within Iloilo City.

Reaching out to communities
The first half of the tour brought reading space advocates to the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) in Iloilo, where they visited the area’s local Book Nook site. Aside from the museum tour, participants also joined in on various activities, including the patadyong race, museum object hunt, and bookmark-making.

The Book Nook Project then visited the Book Nook Nabitasan Integrated School in Barangay La Paz, where the conference participants conducted storytelling sessions and literary activities with the students. Dr. Luis Gatmaitan, award-winning children’s book author, encouraged high school students to express themselves through movement and writing. Meanwhile, storyteller and inspirational speaker Rey Bufi showed future educators and librarians the process of building storytelling communities in Iloilo City.

The stories we read from our books–from our local prose, our myths, poetry, and legends–are all creations of the Filipino community. It is only apt that we do right by the people who bring so much color, life, and richness to our nation’s culture. Our grand encounter this year, as we call it, bears fruit only when we see our reading communities more deeply involved in nurturing our nation’s reading culture,” NBDB Readership Development Division Officer-in-Charge Daniel Mariano said.

Addressing the country’s reading gaps
Spurred by the country’s reading gap, the conference urged participants to collaborate with fellow reading space advocates. Beyond a theoretical exercise, the three-day event featured a series of workshops which ranged from building sustainable community reading spaces to leveraging digital platforms for wider reach. The conference also highlighted Iloilo City's reading community, with a full day of reading activities that took place at the NMP-Iloilo City and the Nabitasan Integrated School in Barangay La Paz.

The Book Nook Project, one of the NBDB’s major projects under its Readership Development Division, was launched in 2021. It adheres to the belief that aklat para sa lahat (books for everyone) should be a basic human right. With over 100 Book Nook sites scattered across the country, the NBDB remains committed to fostering love of reading at a young age by making Filipino-published books more accessible and easily available to students and young readers.

Mastering the Art of Washing with L’art Du Lavage.

Haier Philippines brought together culture, fashion, music, and technology in a one-of-a-kind event where guests experienced firsthand the artistry and innovation behind Haier’s newest washing machine line.

Aptly called “L’ART DU LAVAGE — The Art of Washing”, the program kicked off with a touch of elegance as guests arrived to the sound of live violin music. A cultural dance performance followed, showcasing movement and color that celebrated artistry—an introduction fit for an evening that promised both style and innovation. Warm greetings from Haier executives, together with a video message from company representatives abroad, welcomed the audience and provided context on the inspiration behind the launch.

The highlight of the night was the dramatic unveiling of Haier’s new washing machine models. Presented through a fusion of models, dancers, and stage effects, the moment captured both the beauty of design and the sophistication of technology. The Haier HW140-BD14387GNU1, a 14.0 kg front-load washing machine, drew attention with its Direct Drive motor, colorful touchscreen panel, Wi-Fi capability, and advanced functions such as AI wash, smart dosing, ultra fresh air, and Haier’s Essence Wash 2.0. With its tempered glass design, it balances modern aesthetics with everyday practicality.

Alongside it, Haier introduced the HW120-BPD14367S8U1, a 12.0 kg model that carries a BLDC motor, colorful touchscreen, Wi-Fi, AI wash, smart dosing, and the same Essence Wash 2.0 system. Slightly smaller in capacity yet equally feature-rich, it provides households with a flexible option depending on their lifestyle needs.

Completing the lineup was the Haier HS120-BR1BU, a 12.0 kg washing machine equipped with Double Drive technology for enhanced cleaning performance and Fresh Air functionthat helps keep clothes hygienic and fresh even after the wash. With its modern design and efficient features, this unit added another dimension to the range, offering guests a clear look at Haier’s versatility in fabric care solutions.

Adding context to the launch, GFK speaker Timothy Lazaro shared insights on consumer trends in the home appliance market, emphasizing how technology and convenience continue to shape the way households choose their appliances. Beyond product discussions, guests were also treated to an interactive product experience area where they could explore the washing machines up close, observe live demonstrations, and see the technology in action. This hands-on element allowed the audience to appreciate not just the design but also the performance of the appliances.

As the night progressed, guests were treated to live performances, including a violin interlude and a dance showcase. Raffle draws brought excitement and energy, with winners taking home prizes that added to the celebratory atmosphere. Closing remarks and a final toast wrapped up the evening, leaving attendees with a lasting impression of how Haier continues to merge technology and lifestyle in meaningful ways.

By the end of L’ART DU LAVAGE, the message was clear: washing clothes is not only a daily necessity but can also be reimagined as an art form when paired with thoughtful design and advanced technology. Through this launch, Haier reminded its guests that caring for fabrics is not just about cleanliness—it is about preserving the beauty and comfort of everyday living.

A Festival Of Delight: The Philippine International Comics Festival 2025.

More than 200 Filipino comics creators are set to take the center stage at the Philippine International Comics Festival (PICOF) 2025. Happening on July 5-6 at SM Megamall's Megatrade Hall 2, PICOF 2025 aims to celebrate the country's vibrant komiks heritage and highlight its continuous global recognition. Readers, creatives, students, professionals, and even those who are simply curious and intrigued are invited to this exciting and fun-filled event, with doors opening from 11am until 8pm.

Why Komiks?
With almost a hundred years of richly contributing to Philippine art and culture, Filipino comics, or komiks with a k, is currently riding the wave of its second renaissance.

Filipino Komiks is Traveling the World
During the first golden age of Filipino comics, world-renowned illustrators such as Tony de Zuniga, Nestor Redondo, Alfredo Alcala, and Alex Niño invaded the US to offer their illustration services for the big comics publishers such as Marvel or DC Comics.

Now, it’s the storytellers with their original stories and characters, who are getting published around the world, with over 100 foreign editions of Filipino komiks, published in the US, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and in more countries around the world, making komiks the most translated literary genre of the Philippines.

All of this can be found in the documentary film, “Komiks With a K” directed and produced by National Book Award winning author Jay Ignacio. His 60-minute film will have four screenings and Q&A with the director on Friday 530pm-8pm, and Sunday 5PM-8PM at Megatrade Meeting Room B.

If the world is starting to read komiks, all the more Filipino readers of all ages should start reading komiks as well.

The Books Kids (of all ages) Love to Read
With the growing challenges in literacy, reading books that children or students love to read will definitely be a huge step in the right direction to solving this dilemma. Schools and libraries are more than welcome to start including komiks in their libraries through PICOF.

The PICOF Official Selection
What makes PICOF unique from all the comics festivals around the world, is it’s the only comics festival that selects an Official Selection of ten graphic novel pitches, that are developed in a Creator’s Lab, and published in time for the festival. Several of these books have won awards locally, and represent the Philippines globally with the support of the National Book Development Board.

This PICOF, two Official Selections will be launched—“Blight” by Yuri Pinzon is about a zombie outbreak in Baguio City, and “Cat Cafeteria” by Arli Pagaduan, about a mother-and-daughter and how they build a safe space for their community cats.

New Releases in #PICOF2025?
“Blight” and “Cat Cafeteria,” are just two of the 100 new releases set to be launched in PICOF2025. Creating a full-length graphic novel takes a lot of time, talent, and energy, so here are more titles that will be releasing chapters of their work: “Doobiedoo Asks Whatcha Up 2" by Bambi Amago, Jakob Amago and Roland Amago; “There’s A Daemon In My Head” Chapter 0 by Milo Galang; “Hiraya” Chapter 2 by Fred Cabredo; “Sibol” Chapter 2 by Patricia Ramos and Viel Vidal; “P.S.” Chapter 2 by Danyel Maxin; “The Dungeon” Chapter 1 by Kurt Arzaga; “Bodies On Rooftops” Chapter 1 by Aaron Gabao; “Strike the Spark!” Preview Chapter by Maria Maranan; “Kundiman” Chapter 1 by Yen Peters; and “The Last Wild Swan” Chapter 1 by Tintin Pantoja.

International Guests
Among the international guests present are: Fil-German creator Sheree Domingo (Long Distance Call,) Eisner Winner for Best Webcomics Erica Eng from Malaysia (Fried Rice,) and Singaporean Best Book winner, Kenfoo (Cockman) will all be launching the Philippine edition of their books under Vibal Publishing’s Agimat Comics imprint. There will also be comics creators and publishers from Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Brasil, Slovenia, and Turkey.

Comics Masterclasses

Notable masterclasses are Randy Valiente’s Hagod workshop, teaching the lost art style of Filipino komiks, a Cartooning Workshop with the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas, while Itaewon Class creator Gwang Jin will be speaking about Korean Webtoons and the Industry Landscape. Also teaching masterclasses is award-winning Fil-German creator Sheree Domingo, Thailand-based British creator Jonathan Scott, Eisner Winner Erica Eng from Malaysia, and many more.

Comics Exhibits
PICOF will have three comics exhibits this year, the first featuring the PICOF Official Selection, the second is a tribute to Mars Ravelo’s Mahiwagang Makinilya, and the third is the country of highlight—Palestine through the Enter the Mulberry exhibit whose first public appearance was in the Lakes International Comic Art Festival last year.

Support Palestine
Readers can support Palestine by purchasing merchandise from the Enter the Mulberry exhibit, watch hourly live drawings of komiks creators doing “Panels For Palestine,” and buy a book of Palestinian creator Safaa Odah. All proceeds of the book, merch, and “Komiks With a K” film screenings will go to Medical Aid For Palestine and Safaa Odah herself.

There are so many delightful reasons to go to #PICOF2025. Meranaw Identity and Heritage at the Heart of the 1st Marawi Children's Book Fest.

The National Book Development Board (NBDB), in partnership with Aklat Alamid, will host the first-ever Marawi Children’s Book Fest on June 27-29, 2025 at the Mindanao State University’s main campus.

The event aims to equip authors, illustrators, and publishers with the necessary skills and knowledge in producing children’s books, while highlighting Meranaw culture and traditions.

“There should be available quality and accessible Maranao books that represent who they are and the way they live. In the 2023 National Readership Survey results, there was a notable decline in reading non-school books, which was at 43% for children. Access to books emerged as the primary reason for the decline, with limited awareness of public libraries and constraints in time and distance,” said NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade.

She added, “NBDB’s grant supports publishing stakeholders in enhancing their skills and knowledge through professional development events such as the Marawi Children’s Book Fest. We encourage other organizations to initiate events such as this.”

In a list compiled by Aklat Alamid, only around 20 children’s books from different regions in the country feature Muslim stories from 1990 to 2012 but were mostly authored by non-Muslim Filipinos. The next year, 2013, marked a new milestone as the number of titles featuring Muslim stories increased to more than 100 titles by 2023. With the implementation of Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education starting in the 2012-2013 school year, different mother tongues, including those spoken by Muslim Filipinos, were used in reading materials for early-grade level students.

“The seminar-workshop aims to orient the participants on the importance of books for Meranaw children and to guide the preselected authors and illustrators in the process of developing the picture books,” said M.J. Cagumbay Tumamac, popularly known as Xi Zuq to his readers, who is also the co-founder and administrative head of Aklat Alamid.

He added, “As part of a larger project, [we aim] to develop four picture books on Meranaw culture, created by Meranaw authors and illustrators, written in the Meranaw language, and for Meranaw readers.”

The festival takes on deeper significance in the context of post-siege Marawi, where the 2017 conflict left physical and emotional scars on the community. In the years since, educators, parents, and cultural advocates have underscored the role of storytelling in rebuilding Maranao identity and heritage, as well as promoting healing and fostering peace.

One of the main events at the workshop is a panel discussion titled Stories of Hope: Meranaw Voices from Marawi, which will present peacebuilding efforts in the community and share tools for education and empowerment with the participants.

Meanwhile, there will also be an expressive, interactive, and visual storytelling session on two culturally rich children’s books, Si Jalal Ago So Ranaw and Ranao Monster. These stories are rooted in Meranaw culture and the natural beauty of Lake Lanao, the largest lake in Mindanao.

The three-day event will also include discussions and workshops on the importance of Meranaw children’s books, Maranao orthography, children’s books illustration, and bibliotherapy. In a hybrid format, the book fest is expected to gather 150 participants including students, parents, teachers, authors, publishers, and novice illustrators. The speakers and facilitators are from the MSU-Main Campus, the City Schools Division of Marawi, Teach Peace Build Peace Movement Inc., and Aklat Alamid.

The event is in partnership with the university’s Meranaw Cultural Heritage Center, the City Schools Division of Marawi, and the Division of Lanao del Sur 1 under the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

With the Marawi Children’s Book Fest, the NBDB and Aklat Alamid are working together to reclaim narrative spaces for a community whose stories deserve to be read, heard, and cherished.

Philippine Ballet Theatre Premieres “Maria Makiling”.

In line with Philippine Ballet Theatre's (Philippine Ballet Theatre) mission to promote Philippine heritage, literature, and oral tradition while advancing the art of ballet, Philippine Ballet Theatre has created another original Filipino ballet. The centerpiece of their 2025 season is "Maria Makiling," a full-length ballet that reimagines the legendary guardian of Mount Makiling. Through powerful choreography, this performance captures the essence of Filipino folklore and serves as a reminder to uphold good values.

Winning Collaborations
Maria Makiling marks the third installment of the creative collaboration of Philippine Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Director, Ronilo Jaynario (choreography), and award-winning composer and arranger, Paulo Zarate (original musical score). They are the creative duo behind the successful staging of two original Filipino full-length ballets, Philippine Ballet Theatre’s Ibalon (2023) and Philippine Ballet Theatre’s Sarimanok (2024), which have been well received by audiences both locally and in the U.S.A. Maria Makiling will once again showcase world-class Filipino talent in dance and in music.

Ronilo Jaynario explains, "After creating 'Ibalon,' a hero-based ballet, and 'Sarimanok,' a romantic ballet, I wanted to tell a story that centers on the Filipino community. My goal was to present a ballet that grounds us and evokes a time when love, kindness, and gratitude sustained our communities. This ballet explores the enduring power of love, the pain of loss, and the importance of preserving nature and heritage. Ultimately, it highlights the consequences of a lack of integrity within a community." Creating this ballet was particularly meaningful to him because the Philippine High School of the Arts in Mt. Makiling, Los Baños, Laguna, was his home for four years. During that time, he heard many stories about "Maria," a household name at his school.

Composer Paulo Zarate views Maria Makiling as an exciting challenge, characterized by a collaborative spirit of mutual respect that allows both him and Jaynario to enjoy creative freedom. Their shared vision unifies their work. Zarate explains, "We try to set musical identities to each ballet. For instance, in "Ibalon", it was more anthemic and big, as a superhero movie would sound. In "Sarimanok", it was more rhythmic and percussive, where I played around using meters from 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, 5/8, and 7/8. For Maria Makiling, Ron suggested we go for a more Filipino/Spanish sound, a bit more guitar-driven since both our cultures (Spanish/Filipino) have strong roots with guitar-driven songs like our Filipino kundimans and Spanish flamencos." He hopes that the nuances he created to personify each character and the fantasy treatment in the melodies could really allow the story to flourish on stage.

For this ballet, Philippine Ballet Theatre reached out to Los Banos Tourism office to really ensure that the ballet characterizes Laguna’s diwata in the best possible light. Assisting the creative team was one of Los Banos’ cultural historians UP Los Banos Vice Chancelor for Community Affairs Roberto Cereno, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs.

Quick Synopsis
Set in the scenic town of Laguna, Maria Makiling brings to life the cherished myth of a mountain goddess who protects the land and its people. During a harvest celebration, three men—an arrogant Spanish officer, a scholarly educator, and a kind-hearted farmer—compete for Maria Makiling’s affection. Her choice ignites a dark conspiracy, resulting in heartbreak and injustice. In a poignant climax, nature itself mourns, and Maria Makiling withdraws from the world, choosing to protect it from afar. Though unseen, Maria Makiling’s spirit remains a living force in the land’s prosperity and the people’s hearts.

Casting Choices
Sharing the spotlight in the role of Maria Makiling are Gabby Jaynario and Jessa Tangalin. Each brings her own voice, energy, and heart to the mythical diwata, offering audiences two beautifully distinct portrayals of this iconic character. Their performances promise to highlight both Maria’s strength and her vulnerability in ways that are deeply personal and moving.

Stepping into the role of Juan, Maria’s love interest, are Matthew Davo and Justine Orande. Alternating in the part, they bring fresh chemistry and different emotional shades to Juan’s journey — from romance to heartbreak, and everything in between.

Rex Education Unveils New Book Titles, Organizes Fun Games and Activities at Philippine Book Festival 2025.

What a fiesta! Over 40,000 visitors captivated this year’s Philippine Book Festival (PBF) and energized the 4-day event at the Megatrade Hall in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. PBF 2025 was held recently and was powered by the National Book Development Board (NBDB).

Rex Education the leading book publisher and education solutions provider in the Philippines, participated joyfully and showcased its latest titles by Filipino authors, including Filipiniana titles. REX’s main booth unveiled academic titles from basic, college, and law education, with every offering thoughtfully developed by various experts in the field.

Mr. Paolo Sibal, Ms. Charisse Tugade (Executive Director, NBDB),
and Atty. Dominador Buhain (Chairman and President, Rex Education).

NBDB aptly chose the fiesta theme to make the event merry and fun-filled. Some of the country’s most famous celebrations, such as the Dinagyang Festival, were highlighted during the occasion. In keeping with the festive and celebratory mood, REX offered exclusive deals and big discounts and joined in the fun with exciting games and prizes.

Moreover, REX held a stamp-collecting activity at its Lakbay Aklat booth to give guests an immersive experience. Those who completed the activity received prizes. Additionally, REX organized a Scavenger Hunt where the participants learned more about the company’s offerings while also exploring the event in a fun, engaging way. Those who joined the Scavenger Hunt also received prizes and tokens or REX keepsakes.

What’s more, REX also brought out its Photoman to give guests and learners alike unique photo opportunities to celebrate their learning journey at PBF 2025. This was a great way to capture the event, preserved in a photograph. All these activities and more were a hit with PBF patrons.

Atty. Buhain with some members of the REX team.

REX’s booths demonstrate the company’s commitment to authors, learners, and all book lovers, providing quality Filipino-made books, learning materials, and a dynamic platform for educators and publishing professionals. This year’s PBF, with its fiesta theme, striking and vibrant visuals, and interactive aspects, truly appealed to young children and the young-at-heart. It was a fusion of engaging, experience-based settings with entertainment, education, and shopping convenience.

The Philippine Book Festival 2025, through NBDB, was also an excellent opportunity for the Department of Education (DepEd) and the country’s publishers to connect and strengthen year-long relationships, just as REX and DepEd did during the event. This collaboration enabled DepEd to make large-scale institutional purchases of various learning materials at competitive prices, with the goal of promoting the love of reading to Filipinos and help resolve issues of access and literacy.

As NBDB and DepEd continue the ever-evolving and challenging task of uplifting education in the Philippines through fairs such as the Philippine Book Festival 2025, rest assured that Rex Education will remain a steadfast ally and will provide support in every way possible.

Congratulations, PBF 2025!

3,200 Runners Joined the Haier Run for Future Possibilities 2025.

The Haier Run for Future Possibilities 2025 made an electrifying return on May 25 at the MOA Complex, gathering 3,200 runners in a powerful display of unity, health, and purpose. Now on its second year, the run not only championed physical fitness but also advanced Haier Philippines' mission of giving back—supporting education and well-being initiatives for Filipino youth with every stride.

The run wasn't just about reaching the finish line—it was about running for a cause. In line with Haier’s mission to give back, every step taken contributed to supporting educational opportunities for Filipino children, reinforcing the event’s deeper purpose of creating a brighter future for the next generation.

From the early morning assembly to the final steps across the finish line, runners enjoyed a seamless blend of activity and advocacy. This year’s run reaffirmed Haier’s commitment to going beyond home innovation and giving back to the community.

Beyond the race, participants explored Haier’s commitment to innovation through interactive booths featuring its five major product lines: Air Conditioners, Refrigerators, Gas Ranges, Washing Machines, and Televisions. Each booth offered engaging experiences, product demonstrations, freebies, games, and giveaways that drew runners in even after they crossed the finish line.

Participants were also treated to a festival-like atmosphere, with free taho, ice cream, refreshments, photo walls, and countless Instagrammable moments. Many runners proudly posed with their medals, capturing their achievement on camera and enjoying post-run photo ops.

The event also welcomed notable media personalities and influencers, who joined the run and mingled with participants. Runners were excited to meet and snap photos with their favorite content creators, adding star power to the already exciting event. In addition, Haier’s valued dealer partners participated in full force, showing their strong support for the brand’s advocacy and community outreach.

True to Haier’s spirit of giving, top finishers took home premium appliances including refrigerators, TVs, and washing machines—further motivating runners to push themselves toward the finish line. The raffle draws also gave everyone a chance to win exciting prizes, adding thrill to the morning’s activities.

But the true winners of the day were the communities supported by the cause. During the charity awarding, representatives from Autism Society Philippines and SOS Children’s Villages Pilipinas were acknowledged on stage, receiving donations that will further their invaluable work. Together, these efforts aim to create a brighter, more inclusive future for Filipino youth.

The event wrapped up with a lively performance, photo ops, and messages of thanks from Haier’s leadership. The energy and enthusiasm shared by all attendees confirmed what this run is truly about: celebrating milestones, advancing technology, and building better communities—together.

Haier would like to thank all runners, sponsors, media friends, influencers, and partners who made the event a massive success.

Until the next run—let’s keep moving forward, together.

Why mall voting works
The goal? A smoother, more inclusive voting experience—especially for Persons with Disabilities, senior citizens, and pregnant voters. Think ramps, elevators, comfortable seating, and spacious voting areas—all in a familiar and accessible setting.

We believe democracy should be inclusive, convenient, and secure,” shared Junias Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations at SM Supermalls. “By offering our malls as voting venues, we’re not just making it easier to vote—we’re helping empower every Filipino to make their voice heard.

Democracy meets convenience
This isn’t SM’s first time teaming up with government agencies. Through the SM Government Service Express, select SM malls already offer one-stop access to services like ID processing, permits, and more. The MVP is yet another way SM Supermalls is stepping up to serve the public in meaningful ways.

Plan ahead
Eligible for mall voting? Expect an official advisory from COMELEC about your assigned voting venue. Then, on May 12, head to your designated SM mall, bring a valid ID, and vote with ease.

Let’s all do our part—vote smart, vote safe, and vote comfortably.
