Why are Inverter Window Air Conditioners Gaining Popularity in Filipino Homes?

With daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 30°C, and heat index levels sometimes reaching dangerous ranges during summer months, air conditioning has become less of a luxury and more of a necessity in many Filipino households. At the same time, electricity rates in the Philippines remain among the highest in Southeast Asia, prompting families to look for more energy-efficient cooling solutions.

This combination of rising temperatures and conscious consumption is driving the growing search for the bestinverter-type window air conditioner.

The appeal of inverter technology

Unlike conventional air conditioners that operate on a fixed-speed compressor, repeatedly turning on and off to maintain temperature, inverter models adjust the compressor speed continuously. This allows the unit to maintain a steady room temperature without frequent power surges. The result is:
  • Lower energy consumption
  • Reduced noise levels
  • More stable and consistent indoor cooling
  • Less wear and tear on the compressor

For Filipino families closely monitoring their monthly Meralco or local electric cooperative bills, these advantages can translate into noticeable savings over time.

Energy efficiency amid rising electricity costs

Electricity rates in the Philippines fluctuate depending on fuel costs, generation charges, and distribution fees. As a result, many households are becoming more mindful of appliance efficiency ratings.

Air conditioners account for a significant portion of residential electricity consumption, especially during the dry season from March to May. Choosing a unit with a high Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) or one that carries a favorable energy guide label can significantly reduce long-term operating expenses.

Inverter technology may come with a higher upfront cost compared to non-inverter models, but many consumers find that the monthly savings help offset the initial investment within a few years.

Why are window-type inverter units especially popular? While split-type inverter systems are also available, window-type inverter air conditioners continue to gain traction, particularly among:
  • Condo residents
  • Apartment renters
  • Students and young professionals
  • Small families

The reasons are practical:

Simpler installation
Window-type units are generally easier and quicker to install. Many units are plug-and-play, requiring minimal structural modifications, ideal for rental properties where permanent alterations are restricted.

Lower initial cost
Compared to split-type systems, window units typically require lower upfront spending. There is no need for extensive piping or additional installation materials.

Easier maintenance
Maintenance can be more straightforward, as all components are housed in a single unit. Cleaning and servicing may be more accessible compared to split systems, which have separate indoor and outdoor components. That said, split-type systems may offer quieter operation and a more modern aesthetic. However, they usually involve higher installation costs and more complex servicing.

Choosing the right horsepower (HP) for your space

Selecting the appropriate capacity is critical for both comfort and efficiency. As a general guide:
  • 0.5–1.0 HP: Suitable for small bedrooms (approximately 10–15 sqm)
  • 1.0–1.5 HP: Ideal for medium-sized rooms (15–25 sqm)
  • 2.0 HP and above: Recommended for larger living areas or open spaces

An oversized unit may cool the room too quickly without properly removing humidity, leading to discomfort and unnecessary energy consumption. On the other hand, an undersized unit will struggle to cool the space, causing the compressor to work harder and increasing electricity use.

Filipino homes, particularly those with concrete walls and metal roofing, may retain heat longer, making proper sizing even more important.

Climate realities and long-term durability

The Philippines’ tropical climate also means appliances must withstand high humidity levels, salt air in coastal areas, and voltage fluctuations in some provinces. Buyers are advised to:
  • Check warranty coverage
  • Confirm availability of local service centers
  • Ensure the unit is compatible with local voltage standards

Inverter window-type air conditioners offer a practical balance between affordability, efficiency, and ease of installation, making them a compelling choice for Filipino households seeking comfort without excessive electricity costs. For many consumers, the question is no longer whether to invest in air conditioning, but how to do so wisely.

The 43rd National Book Awards | Nominations Now Open!

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Filipino Critics Circle (FCC) are now accepting nominations for the 43rd National Book Awards (NBA).

First administered by the Filipino Critics Circle or the FCC (formerly known as the Manila Critics Circle) in 1982, the NBA honors the most outstanding books written and published in the Philippines. In 2008, the FCC partnered with the NBDB to co-administer the awards.

The National Book Awards not only rightfully honor the best works produced by our country’s finest minds and talents, they also provide an occasion for us to take stock of the zeitgeist, our writers’ current preoccupations, and where our book industry is headed,” said NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade.

The deadline for nominations is on September 7, 2025. To be eligible, authors and publishers should be NBDB-registered while their works must be published in 2024 and have significance, soundness of content, quality of craft, readability, grammar, copy editing, structure of thought and ideas, and style.

The National Book Awards serve as official recognition of the quality and relevance of winning books, highlighting their contributions and relevance to the growth of Philippine literature, across multiple categories and genres. The NBA is important to us as Filipinos, as we recognize books that matter to us, as a people, while also serving as a portal of possibilities for readers outside of our country,” said FCC Chair Dean Francis Alfar.

He added, “the roster of winners for any given cycle provides a curated list of the best contemporary writing, reflecting not just Filipino sensibilities, but also what concerns and hopes we have, seen through the lens of both fiction and nonfiction.”

Books published for the first time by a Philippine publisher and works with local editions previously published by foreign authors are also eligible for the awards for as long as it has been locally published.

Under the literary division, books will be recognized in categories such as novel, short fiction, nonfiction prose, anthology, drama and film, literary criticism and cultural studies, literary history, media studies, poetry, graphic novel and comics, and translation.

Meanwhile, in the non-literary division, books will be awarded in fields of art, professions, social sciences, history, journalism, humor, sports, lifestyle, and business, food, science, spirituality and theology, and philosophy.

Every year, the NBA honors a different regional language. This year, it will be Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) and Kiniray-a. All books published in these languages within the last three years (2022-2024) are eligible for the awards regardless of genre.

Finally, the Best Book Design award will be given to the work with the best overall design, which encompasses the cover, typeface, dimensions, layout, type of paper, binding, and printing. A Publisher of the Year award, or the publisher with the highest total number of winners in all categories, will also be given.

The Filipino Critics Circle and the National Book Development Board recognize the challenges of writing, editing, illustrating, translating, designing, and producing books. We encourage publishers of all stripes, as well as authors, to submit books for consideration. Being part of the list of finalists is an achievement in and of itself, bringing more awareness of your book to the reading public,” Alfar said.

All nominations shall be submitted through the official online nomination form. Two printed copies of the book shall also be submitted together with one digitally non-editable watermarked PDF. For nominated titles under the Translation category, submissions must also include either one printed copy or one digitally non-editable watermarked PDF of the original work from which the translation originated. For complete submission guidelines, check out this link: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1761KPKJ3H/

The nominated books will undergo a round of deliberations from which no more than five titles will be chosen as finalists per category. The finalists will be required to submit an additional eight copies of their books to the NBDB; non-submission will mean disqualification from the selection. In the final deliberation, one winner will be picked from the finalists of each category. The winner of each category, except the Publisher of the Year, will receive PHP 40,000.00.

Pru Life UK Employees Champion Bayanihan Spirit in Brigada Eskwela 2025.

Pru Life UK once again rolled up its sleeves for Brigada Eskwela, the Department of Education’s nationwide schools maintenance programme, rallying employee volunteers last month in support of Pleasant Hills Elementary School in Mandaluyong City.

The initiative began at the Pru Life UK’s headquarters, where employees painted pots and planted vegetable seedlings. These were later donated during a school outreach, part of a wider effort to prepare classrooms for the new academic year. Volunteers spent the day painting walls, cleaning rooms, and organising books—bringing fresh energy to the school community. Pru Life UK also provided painting materials to support ongoing refurbishment needs.

“It’s fulfilling to give back in such a tangible way,” shares Maria Junifer Maliglig, one volunteer. “Seeing the impact first-hand is what makes it all worth it.” A long-time participant in Brigada Eskwela since 2012, Pru Life UK’s commitment to education goes far beyond paintbrushes.

Through its flagship Cha-Ching Financial Literacy Programme, the company has empowered over 1.5 million students across the Philippines with essential money management skills. Read recent story on expanding and fully integrating it in Bicol region here. The Pleasant Hills Elementary School is also a partner school for Cha-Ching.

Complementing this is the Adopt-a-Madrasah initiative, which supports Islamic schools in Mindanao with learning resources, teacher training, and tailored content on Takaful (Islamic insurance), digital skills, and sustainability. In 2025, the programme aims to reach over 1,500 learners across nine madaris. These efforts reflect Pru Life UK’s broader mission: to foster inclusion, champion financial education, and empower communities—one classroom at a time. Komiket, which has been conducting Comic Book Creator’s Workshops since 2015, announced that the 9th batch of comics creators will be launching their komiks for the first time and they will definitely need all the support they can get.

Likewise, new released comics will get the special treatment they deserve as they will go on stage for the launch of their comics. The launch will be hosted by world comics expert Paul Gravett, Singaporean Comics Critic CT Lim, and Duy Tano, who will get to interview the creators. Among the new releases to be launched are Tuttle Publishing’s international edition of “Janus Silang,” the “Gigil” Anthology featuring 13 girls love one-shot comics, and “In the Jaws Of St. Camillus” by Stevie Barot, whose work was initially featured in Shortbox Comics Festival in the UK.

On the other hand, the Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF), a long-time partner of Komiket working on the tenyearstosavetheworld.com project on climate change, will be working on a four-panel comics workshop for kids, with the view that comics can create a better world. This will be led by Mollie Ray of UK and Patty Ramos of the Philippines. The finished comics will become part of the comics exhibit of PICOF.

𝐶𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐹𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑐𝑠 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑡ℎ
This year, PICOF will also pay tribute to the Alamat Comics creators who started the independent comics scene in Manila through a comics exhibit of collected artworks by the Komikero Museum, and a comics anthology, Alamat Origins. The anthology takes readers back to the stories and art of the first and sometimes only issues of 17 titles released by the Alamat comics group in the 90s. These komiks have now been unearthed, remastered, and revived for new readers to enjoy.

Komikero Museum in San Pablo City.

In a groundbreaking initiative for Southeast Asia, a Comics Rights Market will be held a week before the festival, featuring a two-day rights-selling training with international comics agent Ivanka Hahnenberger. This special project, supported by the National Book Development Board and organized by Komiket, aims to enhance the professional development of Filipino komiks publishers. After the training, they will pitch to eight international publishers from the USA, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Korea, and Myanmar, engaging in business matching sessions to promote Filipino komiks titles. This development initiative supports industry growth and aligns with preparations for the 2025 Frankfurt Buchmesse, where the Philippines holds the distinguished position of Guest of Honour. This prestigious fair, the oldest in the world specializing in translation rights, underscores the Philippines’ commitment to advancing its literary contributions on a global stage.

There will also be festival merchandise available to help raise funds for PICOF2025 to keep the event free for komiks creators and komiks publishers. This year’s poster is illustrated by 2022 Eisner Hall of Fame awardee Alex Niño. Komiket also calls on Filipinos to support over 200 Filipino komiks creators and publishers by purchasing their komiks. Every purchase during PICOF 2024, where book lovers, film geeks, and animation and video game enthusiasts who love visual storytelling will enjoy in this festival of sequential art, will help encourage creators to continue creating magnificent creations that can be showcased to the world.

Now is the right time to #supportfilipinocomics. Head to the Philippine International Comics Festival (PICOF) 2024 on July 20-21, 2024, from 10 AM – 8 PM at The Podium Hall, 6/F The Podium along ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City. Hemophilia Community Celebrates Success Over World Hemophilia Day 2024.

Hemophilia Advocates-Philippines (HAP), a national nonprofit organization for people with hemophilia and related bleeding disorders, proudly announces the success of its latest awareness campaign. Held at the Festival Mall, Alabang on April 13, 2024, World Hemophilia Day brought together about 250 patients, members, supporters, and advocates from across the country in a collective effort to raise awareness for those affected by hemophilia.

Hemophilia is a rare genetic bleeding disorder that affects about 10,000 Filipinos. However, in the 2020 study conducted by the World Federation of Hemophilia, only around 1,600 cases have been diagnosed and registered.

Through educational discussions led by HAP’s medical advisors from the Philippine Children’s Medical Center and Philippine General Hospital, attendees, mall goers, and Facebook live spectators learned more about hemophilia care in the present age. The gathering also highlighted testimonies of how HAP’s partnerships with other organizations created opportunities and positive impact to improve the quality of life of persons with bleeding disorders.

This event also strengthened our efforts to call forth the attention of the Philippine government to hasten the passage of the Bleeding Disorders Standard of Care Bills that have been pending in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The generosity and compassion displayed by the guest speakers, advocates, and performers including Peter Harbinson a renowned Australian Opera Singer, underscored the importance of coming together to increase awareness and provide opportunities for individuals living with bleeding disorders to lead better lives.

HAP successfully commemorated World Hemophilia Day thanks to the commitment of its volunteers, donors, as well as foreign and local partners including Festival Mall-Alabang, Save One Life, Project
Share, Virtualahan, Jollibee, and the media sponsorship by Inquirer.net, Cebu Daily News Digital, Pop!, Preen.ph and Be An Inquirer.

The funds raised through donations and merchandise sold will directly support HAP’s initiatives to make information accessible and comprehensive care available at the grassroots level.

"We are overwhelmed by the incredible support we received during this event," said Andrea Trinidad, HAP's President. "Every donation, every step taken, and every conversation had a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by hemophilia. Together, we are making a difference and providing hope for a brighter future."

HAP extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who participated, donated, and supported the event. The generosity and commitment to their cause are invaluable, and with our continued support, we can all create a world where individuals with hemophilia can live healthier, happier lives.

Resilience through preparation: PCPPI reinforces disaster preparedness capabilities to build stronger Filipino communities.

In the Philippines, the second half of the year not only signals the start of the long countdown to Christmas, but also monsoon season. Traditionally, typhoons sweep across the country during this time, often aggravating the south-western spell (“Habagat”) that trigger flooding and other concerns.

At least 20 typhoons hit the Philippine area of responsibility every year, with the violent ones often posing the biggest threat to human lives and industry, that may result in costly economic loses and damages.

Given the frequency of natural hazard events in the country, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI)—the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country—ensures that its Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) teams are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to mitigate disaster risk by regularly conducting refresher training courses.

We conduct policy and procedure refreshers among our EHSS teams to enhance our disaster preparedness. We revisit our strategy, which are aligned with guidelines set by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) policies, on what to do before, during, and after hazardous events,” said PCPPI Sr. Manager for Safety and Security Dindo C. Garcia.

We also conduct monthly performance monitoring to see if our teams across the country are consistently aligned with the regulatory standards and to assess the areas that merit improvement,” he added.

PCPPI is also committed to building on stronger relationships with local government units (LGU) to help enable and support communities in times of natural hazard events.

Our employees are at the heart of our operations. It is our responsibility to ensure we not only empower our teams and partners, but also our customers and the communities where we operate. We recognize our responsibility to prepare and help them in times of emergencies and calamities towards quick recovery with minimal disruption to their activities,” Garcia added.

PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of well-known beverage brands in the Philippines, such as Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton, Sting, Premier, Milkis, and Chum Churum Soonhari. Every day is National Fried Chicken Day!

Happy Fried Chicken Day!
Just in case you didn’t know, July 6 is National Fried Chicken Day! This is the one day solely dedicated to the crispy, golden, and delicious fried chicken that Filipinos dearly love. Although there is no curated historical information on how fried chicken really started in the Philippines, it is undeniable that fried chicken is one of Filipinos’ comfort food, loved by kids (case in point, my son, niece, and nephew) and the kids at heart (ehem, that would be me, my siblings, and my cousins).

Chicken is not only delicious but also nutritious because it is a good source of protein and has Vitamin B12 which supports bone health and red blood cell formation.

And what's the best way to cook friend chicken? Of course, it's with the Philippines' #1 fried chicken essential - Crispy Fry®! Crispy Fry® has a wide array of product offering specially made to deliver delicious fried dishes to perfection.

Spicy Fried Chicken with Gravy
Heat things up and add some spicy flare to your fried chicken. Try Crispy Fry® Breading Mix Spicy variant and enjoy fried chicken with perfect crispness and hotness.

To complement, you may pair it with the new Crispy Fry® Gravy Mix. So easy to prepare. Just mix water and Crispy Fry® Gravy Mix in a bowl, then pour the gravy sauce into a pot and simmer until thickened. And viola! Your homemade fried chicken and gravy are ready for your enjoyment.

Battered Fried Chicken
If you’re the type who likes southern-style fried chicken, thicker and fuller with extra crunch, try Crispy Fry® Batter Mix.

So simple to prepare. In a bowl, combine the batter pack of the Crispy Fry® Batter Mix with water then mix well. On a separate plate, pour the contents of the breading mix. Coat each chicken with batter mix and then roll evenly one by one on the breading.

In a pot with heated oil, deep-fry the chicken pieces for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown. Drain excess oil using a strainer or colander and you’re all set to enjoy fuller fried chicken with extra crispiness!

Fried Chicken Burger
Who says fried chicken can only be enjoyed with rice? This recipe is so easy to prepare and perfect as quick lunch or merienda.

First, coat the chicken thigh fillet with Crispy Fry® Original Breading Mix evenly and fry for 10 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown. Next, prepare the sauce by combining mayonnaise and garlic in a bowl. Then assemble, on a burger bun, put lettuce, tomato, cucumber, fried chicken, and 2 teaspoons of mayo-garlic sauce.
