Gatorade No Sugar fuels Filipinos forward this summer.

Hello, summer! Hello to fun activities under the sun!
With the bright and sunny weather, more Filipinos embrace the great outdoors to spend time with family and friends or learn new skills and sports. But with the sweltering heat, the body loses not only water, but also valuable nutrients to regulate basic functions are used up at quicker rates.

Medical journals and health experts warn that the likelihood of getting dehydrated is high during summertime. If not addressed immediately, the effects of dehydration may be irreparable and require lifelong treatment. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) reminds everyone to hydrate regularly and pay close attention to how much sugar is consumed during the dry season.

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI), the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country, supports this call by encouraging Filipinos to fight dehydration while staying fit and active with Gatorade No Sugar. This electrolyte drink helps recover the body’s lost minerals without the unnecessary calories from sugar.

Electrolytes are key to one’s physical performance and overall well-being, as they help balance the amount of water and nutrients in the body. They regulate nervous, motor, and cardiovascular functions so that mind and body perform as they should.

“We lose more than water when we sweat, and we must take the necessary steps to continue nourishing our bodies to keep healthy. Gatorade No Sugar is packed with electrolytes and essential nutrients to replenish our bodies’ supply especially during the humid Philippine summer,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

Summer Days, Summer Lice: Here are Tips to Make Your Child's Hair Kuto-Free and Smell Nice!

Summertime is one of the most exciting seasons for children. It is the perfect opportunity for them to go on vacations, embark on outdoor escapades, spend quality time with friends, and create the most cherished childhood memories. Playing outside under the sun for hours with both old and new friends is undoubtedly an activity that creates the fondest memories. In addition, it builds a child’s confidence, communication, and social skills.

However, being exposed outdoors also poses harm to our children. In a study conducted by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of the Philippines, over 54.7% of the population of primary school children are infested by head lice, or kuto – a tiny parasite that feeds off human blood from the scalp of its host, which renders no benefit but rather pure discomfort, irritability, hassle, and other more serious conditions such as skin infection.

With the goal to continuously raise awareness on head lice infestation issues and promote prevention, Lamoiyan Corporation, maker of Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo shares tips and hacks to equip moms on how to achieve a kuto-free summer with their kids!

Tip #1 Minimize Head-to-Head Contact

Head lice do not fly, hop, or jump from one head to another. In fact, their only mode of transmission is through head-to-head contact and the sharing of personal hair accessories according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). During playtime, children may naturally put their heads together, and a good way to minimize these interactions is to put long hair in a ponytail or braid. A small amount of hair spray can also help contain stray hairs. Children can also be taught the importance of privacy and ownership of personal belongings to maintain good hygiene. The best approach to instilling habits in children is to help them understand the underlying reasons – making it more likely they will follow through and eventually adopt the habits as their own.

Tip #2 Identifying the Problem

Always take precautions. A John Hopkins Medicine article shared that knowing that your child is infected as early as possible is already the first and most important step in helping them. One of the earliest and most common symptoms is your child's frequent head scratches which is due to the itchiness caused by the bites of the tiny parasites. The same CDC article said that the best way to confirm is to look for live lice. First, you must wet your child’s hair and dampen it a little bit, just enough to eliminate water from dripping. Then, use a special fine-toothed comb locally called “Suyod” to detect and remove lice.

Tip #3 Prevent Contamination

If a lice infestation is confirmed, containing the problem is needed to avoid its further spread according to the article from John Hopkins Medicine. Anyone is a possible host as long as their scalps are inhabitable for the lice to survive. This indicates that parents, people working in childcare, and entire families can be affected. Washing pillowcases, blankets, and any shared items that touch the head may help contain the lice. Nonetheless, head lice transmission through inanimate items is uncommon, but not impossible.

Tip #4 Reducing the Damage

While almost every Filipino household possesses a suyod, it is not a recommended tool for eradicating lice infestations. It may remove lice and nits that get stuck in the middle of the teeth of the comb, but it won’t essentially stop their spread. In fact, pagsusuyod should only be done moderately, as too much use of the comb may damage the scalp, causing open wounds that allow germs and bacteria to enter the body and cause more harm. It is advisable to use it right after using Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo to remove any remainders—if there are any!

Tip#5 Using the Right Treatment

Avoid home remedies and use scientifically proven treatments. Home remedies such as petroleum jelly, mayonnaise, kerosene, essential oils, or olive oil are ineffective and pose adverse effects such as skin irritation and inflammation. They can also reach the eyes of children, which can affect their eyesight. Using clinically proven products such as Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo exudes 100% confidence, backed by experts in safely eradicating lice in children—no side effects included. It contains pyrethrin, a natural active ingredient proven effective in eliminating head lice. Although it is indeed recommended to rely on natural treatments, it is always best to let scientists handle the science.

While lice infestation is considered the second most common problem in children, it is neither inevitable nor untreatable. With enough preparation and the right knowledge, mommies can be assured of their children’s safety while having fun under the sun. Making sure that children experience their childhood as free and fun as it can be is one of the best ways to express love and affection to them.

Packing Tips To Simplify Your Summer Beach Vacation.

Beachfront vacations have always been trending. This type of vacation is an absolute favorite for so many reasons. As a result, planning a beachfront getaway is pretty straightforward. There are also many great beachfront destinations to consider, with some of the best beaches in America, including Cape Cod and Laguna Beach.

It's also pretty straightforward to find accommodation when using a hotel finder platform. Whether you need to find a place to stay in Myrtle Beach, Miami Beach, or anywhere else, these platforms will round up all the options for you and help you locate the most suitable selection.

Myrtle Beach Hotels Oceanfront includes various accommodation options to suit different budgets. You can easily find family-friendly accommodation, affordable per-night stays, and so much more in a few clicks.

But with that said, these practical packing tips will help ensure your beach vacation is absolute bliss.

Prioritize Skincare

Because you'll be visiting the beach and spending so much time in the sun, skincare is imperative to a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately, if you skip out on any of your essential skincare products or don't pack in enough sunscreen, you might end up spending the bulk of your vacation battling sunburn or even windburn.

Moon Ga Young in True Beauty (2020).

So, just in case, be sure to pack in enough skincare products and a few skin restoration products such as aloe vera ointments and others.

Pack A Variety Of Garments

Spending time at the beach will prove just how unpredictable and chaotic weather can be; a perfectly sunny day can end with a raging storm, and a gloomy morning can end with a peaceful vibrant evening.

Shin Min Ah and Kim Seon Ho in Hometown Cha Cha Cha (2021).

So, while it's wise to pack in mostly breezy clothing and enough swimsuits, you should also pack in various garments to be prepared for changing weather.

Essential Gadgets

Even though you're probably planning on spending the bulk of your time soaking up the sun or participating in various seafront activities, you will also need some gadgets. Your smartphone, laptop, and perhaps your kindle are all items you should bring along.

And while there's no doubt you'll remember to pack in your chargers, you should also bring along a universal adapter, depending on where you will be staying.

Invest In The Right Luggage

The best way to make packing a simple task and avoid forgetting essentials and comfort extras behind is to have the right luggage. If your primary luggage bag is not spacious enough, packing can be an overwhelming mess.

My luggage brand of choice.

Beyond that, the right luggage will also simplify packing as various separate compartments, waterproofing, and other suitable luggage elements make packing easy.

Look for sturdy luggage with compartments, spacious enough, and comfortable carrying or cart with you. You can also consider adding a GeoTag or security tag to your luggage bag.

While you should also consider things like making the most of your vacation budget, investing time and thought towards planning is fundamental. Fortunately, with all the smart hacks and savvy tips out there, packing for a beach vacation is easier than ever before.

4 Easy and Healthy Summer Recipes for Kids.

For kids, summer means having adventures outdoors but quarantine restrictions have put a pause to that. Parents have to get extra creative in ensuring their children still have fun and lead healthy lifestyles even if they’re mostly indoors. Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation is helping parents this summer by sharing creative, affordable and delicious, yet easy and nutritious gulay recipes that will add colors and adventure to their kids’ plates at home.

Welcome summer with these easy and healthy recipes for kids!

We understand the challenge parents have in making meals for their kids, especially in encouraging them to eat vegetables,” says Ajinomoto’s Science Communication Executive, Deborah S. Fajarda, RND. “Through these veggie recipes, we want to address this concern and provide creative ways on how parents can make nutritious dishes enjoyable and fun for their kids. We want to show that mealtimes can be both a healthy and adventurous journey for parents and their children.”

Here are 4 easy, affordable, healthy, and fun veggie recipes that Ajinomoto developed for parents to enjoy with their kids at home:

Crispy Fry® Cauliflower Bites.

Crispy Fry® Cauliflower Bites
Add a satisfying crunch to your kid’s meryenda with the easy-to-make Crispy Fry Cauliflower Bites. This could be an alternative to snacks like chicken nuggets. Cauliflower is high in potassium. Potassium, in right amount together with sodium, helps maintain fluid balance in the body which is important during the hot weather. CRISPY FRY® Breading Mix gives the crunch that kids love, while the SARSAYA® Sweet and Sour sauce offers a tangy flavor to make this snack even more special. Read the full recipe here.

Mini Spinach and Cheese Pizza.

Mini Spinach and Cheese Pizza
Make pizza healthier with this variant that uses spinach. Spinach is rich in calcium, iron, and vitamin A, which help in strong bone and muscle development, maintaining good eye sight, healthy red blood cells and strong immune system for growing boys and girls. This recipe uses PORKSAVOR® All-in-One Seasoning Mix, which adds a meaty taste that children will enjoy. They can also join in preparing the pizza by adding the toppings all over the dough. Copy the recipe here.

Mixed Veggie Kiddie Patties.

Mixed Veggie Kiddie Patties
These patties can be enjoyed as an ulam or as a snack between hamburger buns. These are made from chicken breast, which contains more lean protein and less saturated fat and cholesterol. The ingredients also include cucumber, broccoli florets, and bell pepper, which are also filled with important nutrients. Not only is it healthy, but also simple. You can make this in 4 easy steps. Make the patties crunchier with the CRISPY FRY® Seasoned Crumbs. See the recipe here.

Fun Camote and Carrot Fries.

Fun Camote and Carrot Fries
Squeeze in that extra beta carotene into your kid’s meals by turning carrot sticks into “fun” fries. This bright and naturally sweet veggie is a great way to entice picky eaters. To make it more appealing, you can also mix it up with sweet potatoes or camote. Here’s a fun fact too! Did you know that camote, or sweet potato, is rich in potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber to keep bodies healthy. Adding AJI-GINISA® Flavor Seasoning Mix will also bring a meaty stir-fry deliciousness that will elevate this snack. This Fun Camote and Carrot Fries only takes 15 minutes to cook, so kids have something to eat right away when feeling hungry. You may also opt to use an air fryer to lessen fat content. Follow the recipe here.

With these recipes, Fajarda also reminds parents to know the recommended amount of vegetables needed by their children to ensure a balanced diet. For ages 3 to 5, 1/2 cup is ideal, 3/4 cup for ages 6 to 9, and 3/4 to 1 cup for ages 10 to 12.

These recipes are clever and fun ways of adding vegetables to kids’ daily menu---and making them can even help parents encourage healthy routines and strengthen their bonds with their young ones. Involving our children into meal planning and cooking, such as reading recipes and learning about veggies can likewise help them know about proper nutrition in a fun and tasty way,” says Fajarda.

These healthy and creative recipes are part of Ajinomoto’s Eat Well, Live Well commitment. Ajinomoto has dedicated itself to developing ideas and creating products and services that aim to improve the wellness of Filipino households.

How to Enjoy Sports Activities Under the Sun.

Summer has come around again this year, and it is only getting hotter every day. There are many activities one can do during the summer season, and sports is one of them. But because of how hot it can get during this season, it is important to know how to be prepared under the heat of the sun. Here are some things to take note of during the summer and tips on how to enjoy sports activities under the sun.
Prepare Your Skin for the Summer
A healthy body is important for athletes and sports enthusiasts as this means that they can perform their tasks to the utmost of their ability during sports activities. During the summer, however, one should take into account the amount of time they are outside underneath the heat of the sun. Too much sun exposure can be harmful to skin, which is why it is important that one prepares their skin during prolonged periods under the sun.

The sunlight that reaches the earth has ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the main causes of skin damage. UVA and UVB rays affect the skin’s sensitivity to sun exposure in different ways. UVA rays are more dominant than UVB rays and can cause long-term damage to the skin since it penetrates deep into the skin’s layers. UVB rays are more intense during the summer season, most especially during the middle of the day, and can cause skin cancer.

It is important to prepare the skin before venturing outdoors. Protect your skin from the rays of the sun by making sure to apply sunscreen on any exposed skin, including the limbs, the face, and even the ears. Use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen that is SPF 50 or higher, and reapply every two hours especially for extended outdoor activity. One should also try to go under the shade as much as possible. Cover up where you can with wide-brimmed hats or visors, and wear comfortable clothing that is lightweight like cotton, hemp, or linen and are light colored.

Kim Woo Bin for Merrell (2016).

Wear Protective Clothing
There are many sports clothing companies that have already thought of the athletes and sporty people that love to stay outdoors. Clothes that have UPF, or ultraviolet protection factor, on the label should be the prime choice for outdoor athletes. The higher the UPF rating, the fewer UV rays reach the skin. Clothes with a UPF of 50, for example, allows just 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. Light-weave UPF clothing can protect the body without impeding on the workout or activity.

Protective clothing extends not only toward protection from the sun but protection from overworked muscles as well. Athletes that train under the intense heat of the sun are at risk of both burning their skin and burning the muscles used. Ensure that you are protected from muscle overuse by using KT tape. KT tapes are made of 100 percent cotton fibers with specialized elastic cores that help reduce the pressure, discomfort, and pain from using the muscles during training. This tape alleviates the swelling and muscle inflammation from lymphatic fluid buildup in the muscles while also supporting it by improving the muscles’ ability to contract.
Han Ji Min for Dazed (March 2019).

Protect the Eyes with Sunglasses
The eyes are the next part of the body that need to be protected during the summer season as they are also vulnerable to ultraviolet rays from the sun even when the effects aren’t felt right away. Short-term effects of overexposure to UV rays include excessive blinking, swelling, or difficulty looking at strong sunlight. Overexposure can also cause sunburn of the cornea known as photokeratitis, also known as snow blindness or welders’ flash burns.

Photokeratitis, or ultraviolet keratitis, is a painful eye condition caused by exposure of insufficiently protected eyes to the ultraviolet rays from either natural or artificial sources. This is why it is important to protect the eyes during scorching hot weather during the summer season. Sunglasses protect the eyes from 5 to 10 percent of visible light that absorbs almost all UV rays. These glasses should have large lenses and should always be worn. Additionally, consider using options like wiley x prescription safety glasses to provide both UV protection and vision correction, offering enhanced safety and comfort

Be Cautious of Some Medications
There are a few medications that you should be aware of that make you more sensitive under the sun, so make sure to be extra vigilant when outdoors when these are being taken. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are a few to take note of.

Missha All-around Safe Block.

Don’t Forget to Take a Break
Prolonged exposure under the sun is how one gets sunburned, so make sure to take a break every hour or so. Since sports require that you train your body for hours on end, make sure that every training session outdoors is timed accordingly. Since sunscreen needs to be reapplied, taking a break will help remind you on when to dab on a new protective layer of SPF lotion onto the skin.

Although there are many things to consider when it comes to sun protection, it is imperative that one is reminded of the good things that the sun can offer. Sunlight is known to be a great mood enhancer—no wonder why others tend to say “Go out in the sun” when they see another feeling blue. The sun is also a great source of vitamin D, which is a vitamin that helps maintain bone strength. Lastly, don’t forget the important thing of all during the summer, and that is to enjoy and make great memories!

Spotlight | Althea Skin Relief Calming Cream + Althea Waterful Green Bamboo Pads.

I have a love-hate relationship with summer, particularly this kind of summer that we're experiencing right now in the Philippines. I love that my kid is on a school break which gives us a chance to travel; I hate how the hot and humid weather takes a toll on my body, particularly on my lungs (asthma) and on my skin (allergies, red and blotchy skin).

These are the reasons why I am only too happy with the newest additions to Althea's very own skincare line. They came in the mail a few days ago, and they couldn't have come at a better time. My skin needs all the help it can get to keep it hydrated and moisturized in this sweltering heat, and to prevent those red, blotchy spots from appearing on my face.
The latest from Althea - the Skin Relief Calming Cream and the Waterful Green Bamboo Pads.
Like a gift from the gods, the Althea Skin Relief Calming Cream is a lush facial cream that hydrates, soothes, and repairs skin from damage caused by irritants and harmful external pollutants.
Althea Skin Relief Calming Cream, Php 560.
It's formulated with panthenol, a substance derived from vitamin B that soothes the skin and helps strengthen its protective barrier. It's also infused with seawater and chamomile water which help the skin retain its moisture, plus a mix of shea butter and hydrogenated lecithin that nourishes the skin and protects it against harmful external factors such as dust, smoke, and pollution. Another note-worthy ingredient is the Centella asiatica extract which 'calms' the skin and repairs it from damage.
It comes in an 80 mL squeeze tube.
This product has a light, watery consistency despite the initial creamy appearance, and has a soft, citrus-y scent which reminds me of tangerines. It's non-sticky, non-greasy, and is easily absorbed by the skin.
Lush, creamy appearance.
I love how my skin feels soft and refreshed after every application, but what I love more about this product was how it got rid of the red, blotchy patches on my face overnight. I literally woke up to soft, clear skin with the Althea Skin Relief Calming Cream, and to say that I was impressed with this product would be a complete understatement.
Light, watery texture when applied.
Now if it's extra boost of hydration that you want, look no further as the Althea Waterful Green Bamboo Pads got you covered.
Althea Waterful Green Bamboo Pads, Php 700.
These woven, gauze-like pads are infused with Bambusa vulgaris (bamboo) extract that's rich in minerals and amino acids. This product also contains extracts from Salix nigra (willow), known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, and Centella asiatica, which soothes, treats, and repairs damaged skin.
Comes with a small plastic tweezer. Each tub contains 80 pads.
You can use these moisture pads two ways - as a toner or as a sheet mask. When used as a toner, you simply wipe the pad all over your face. These pads are pretty soaked, so you'll only need one for toning.
Soft, woven-like texture.
Used as a sheet mask, the Althea Waterful Green Bamboo Pads provide a more concentrated dose of hydration. Simply put the pads onto targeted areas of the skin and allow them to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. I prefer using them this way, and I love how my skin feels softer, smoother, and firmer afterwards.
Pampering at home with the Althea Waterful Green Bamboo Pads.
The Althea Skin Relief Calming Cream and the Althea Waterful Green Bambood Pads are both available at the Althea website. Shipping fee is waived for orders worth more than Php 1000, cash-on-delivery option is also available for orders worth more than Php 2000.

Spotlight | Clio Kill Protection Sun Base.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. Thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Summer is now in full swing here in the Philippines It's currently 33 degrees outside, the air is still, and the weather overall is just so uncomfortably humid. Now if you think that's hot (and annoying), brace yourself as the weather bureau has announced that it could be sweltering by the end of the month. Goodness!

At times like these, I would rather stay in the comforts of my home lest my asthma acts up. If I need to leave the house, I'd be slathered in organic sunscreen and armed with an umbrella, wearing very little makeup or sometimes, none at all.

Now speaking of makeup, I've been using a different primer since summer officially started. For the past two weeks, I've been using the Clio Kill Protection Sun Base and so far, so good. I bought these at one of the Clio stores in Myeongdong during my last Seoul Searching trip; they were having a 1+1 sale at that time so I got both variants of the sun base for the price of one (16000 Korean won - around Php 740 or $14).
Clio Kill Protection Sun Base in Matte and Glow.
Clio Kill Protection Sun Base in Matte and Glow.
The Clio Kill Protection Matte Sun Base is a multi-function makeup base that controls oil, blocks harmful UV rays, and leaves the skin with a light, matte finish. It's enriched with silica powder to keep your face from turning into a greasy, shiny mess, and an anti-sebum complex composed of evening primrose, arrowroot, pine leaf, and elm extracts, to keep the oils at bay.
Clio Kill Protection Matte Sun Base, SPF 50+ PA++++.
Lightly-tinted with a hint of powdery fragrance, the Clio Kill Protection Matte Sun Base evens out the skin tone and preps your skin for makeup. It feels soft and silky on the skin, the way setting powder does, and keeps your makeup intact for pretty much an entire day. It does, however, leave a slight white cast on the skin, which can easily be corrected with a translucent setting powder.
Clio Kill Protection Glow Sun Base, SPF 50+ PA++++.
On the other hand, the Clio Kill Protection Glow Sun Base has a gel-type formula that feels light and refreshing on the skin. It brightens the complexion as it covers minor skin imperfections, and leaves the skin feeling hydrated and moisturized, the way a facial essence does. Like the Matte variant, this product has a subtle, fresh fragrance that becomes more noticeable as you blend it out on your skin.
Comes in 50 mL squeeze tubes.
Aside from its sun protection benefits, the Clio Kill Protection Glow Sun Base also gives your face a lovely, glowing sheen. It may not be as highly effective as a makeup base compared to its 'Matte' counterpart (I have to retouch a few times a day whenever I'm wearing the Glow Sun Base), but the luminous, healthy finish and the 'glass skin' effect makes up for it.

The swatches below will show you the difference between the two variants.
Left: Clio Kill Protection Matte Sun Base.
Right: Clio Kill Protection Glow Sun Base.
The Matte variant is lightly-tinted and has a creamier consistency, while the Glow variant is colorless and has a gel-like consistency.
Left: Clio Kill Protection Matte Sun Base.
Right: Clio Kill Protection Glow Sun Base.
The Matte Sun Base has a thicker formula, while the Glow Sun Base goes on smoothly and is easily absorbed by the skin.
Left: Clio Kill Protection Matte Sun Base.
Right: Clio Kill Protection Glow Sun Base.
The Matte Sun Base has better coverage but leaves a slight white cast, the Glow Sun Base has a sheer finish but makes the skin look dewy.

Personally, I am more partial to the Glow Sun Base because I'm a fan of the dewy makeup look. If you have dry skin, the Glow Sun Base will suit you better; but if you have oily skin, you might find the Matte Sun Base more to your liking. Both products have the ideal sun protection factor of SPF 50+ PA++++, and thankfully, neither of the two gave me allergies or broke me out.
Wearing the Clio Kill Protection Matte Sun Base as my sunscreen/primer.
At my son's Recognition Day, wearing the Clio Kill Protection Glow Sun Base
as my sunscreen/primer.
Will I repurchase? That would be a resounding yes! Much better if they'll be on sale again when I fly back to Seoul! :)
