Textbook Rentals | Frugal and Practial.

As graduate of a state university (one of the best in my country, if I may just brag), there were certain times during my college years that I opted for textbook rentals instead of buying new ones.

For instance, the first semester during my freshman year. Despite being a Development Communication major, Math 11 (otherwise known as College Algebra) was part of our course curriculum. Unfortunately, this was also a prerequisite to some of my major subjects, and I had no choice but to take it. Math and I never got along, and back then, I had been pretty sure that once I pass my Math 11, I wouldn't even touch Leithold's College Algebra and Trigonometry even with a ten-foot pole.

Ugh, Math!
So instead of spending lots of money on books that I really had no interest in or will be used for just one semester, I rent textbooks instead. The money I saved from not buying new ones were in turn allotted for other school expenses such as transport fares, housing fees, and food allowance

My three year old will be starting with his School Readiness Program next week, and before I know it, he'd be going to college as well. My dream for him is to graduate from the same university that I did; I just hope he'll be far better than me when it comes to Math.

  1. OMG! I'm feeling nostalgic! The only book where I really bother to open and review! ahahahhahaa! Well, at least before I reached the calculus stage. :)

  2. I really wish I had done this in college. Would've saved a bunch of money.

  3. Math was never my strength either. Smart to rent textbooks for the storage space you save later on alone! ;)

  4. Me too. I borrowed books from upperclassmen who were my friends. :P At the dorm, we also had book rentals so I also went there to borrow books too. Really not worth it unless those are books for your major subjects. :)

  5. This is SO necessary right now, seeing as so many natural resources have been endangered because of irresponsible/non-sustainable printing ventures. Glad to know you're taking this frugal step -- bravo!

  11. I have heard of this a few times now, I think it's a great idea. Especially with the cost of everything right now. I would have loved to rent my math text books so I would never, ever have to see it again. Ever!!! I even hate doing first grade math with my son!! Great post as always!

  13. i can relate to that math 11. my eldest daughter had frequent sessions with her dad over skype because she had difficulty with it, too. i would often tell her, "what's so damning about math at ur school, where i passed them w/ flying colors at my university". she would say, "mom, ur sch is nothing comparable to my sch". haha. a very "proud" iska, indeed.

  14. We didn't have rental options when I was in school. I had to spend so much money on books, I kept them, because standing in line to sell them back for pennies, wasn't worth it. The cost of books was outrageous then, and I'm sure much more now!
